Job description

The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, located in Baltimore, is currently accepting applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2023-24 academic year, with continuation for a second year upon good performance. The Professor will teach in the Lawyering Program, supervise the operations of the law school’s Legal Writing Center, and teach and mentor student writing fellows. The candidate will have a functional title of Professor of the Practice and Director, Legal Writing Center, and payroll title of Visiting Assistant Professor. This is a contract position that is not on the tenure-track.

Law school campus: Maryland Carey Law is advantageously located in downtown Baltimore near multiple courthouses, government agencies, prominent law and financial firms, major-league sports facilities, and nonprofit organizations. The law school campus also is easily accessible within the greater Washington DC-Baltimore metropolitan region, close to I-95 and only 40 minutes from Washington by Amtrak or commuter rail.


Responsibilities:

  • Teach two sections of Lawyering I in the fall and Lawyering II in the spring
  • Direct the Legal Writing Fellows Program, managing the activities of approximately 20 upper-level-student Writing Fellows

o Develop and teach 1-credit fall Writing Fellows seminar

o Design, oversee, and advertise Writing Fellow-led skills workshops on topics related to citations skills, writing skills, study skills, and other fundamental lawyering skills

o Train and supervise student Writing Fellows on responsibilities related to the Legal Writing Center, including assisting first-year students with analytical and other writing skills development, and upper-level students with advanced seminar papers


o Update student Writing Fellow resources

  • Manage the law school's Legal Writing Center

o Oversee the operations of the law school’s Legal Writing Center, including training and supervising student Legal Writing Fellows

o Develop and update Legal Writing Center resources, including the Legal Writing Center Blackboard page

o Coordinate with law school’s Career Development Office (CDO) to support students with writing associated with job searches, including cover letters, resumes, and writing samples

o Promote extra-curricular student writing opportunities, including writing competitions

  • Serve as a member of the Lawyering leadership team, including collaborating with the Lawyering Director and Managing Director in the development of simulated legal practice-based problem set and related materials for each semester

Qualifications


Required Qualifications:

  • JD degree from an ABA-approved law school
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated record of teaching excellence, with at least 5 years teaching experience in legal writing, lawyering, or other skills courses
  • At least 3-5 years of practice experience preferred
  • Prior experience managing a law school’s Writing Center or overseeing student writing fellows preferred
