Job description

The title of this position is Artist Fabricator (furthermore in this document abbreviated as AF). AF’s at MAD FAB work in warehouse conditions creating themed environments, props and show set pieces using their own trade skills and artistic talent. AFs are not expected to have expert level trade skills however they are expected to be hungry to learn, creative and dedicated and are expected to have at least a proficient working knowledge of most if not all of the trades MAD FAB deals in. AFs are most successful if they excel at creative problem solving, have a meticulous eye for detail and can take constructive criticism to continually improve their trade skills and techniques. AF is a physically demanding job requiring standing, lifting, and use of hand tools and power tools as well as specialized equipment.

With hard work and dedication an Apprentice Artist Fabricator (AAF) can advance to the roll of Artist Fabricator (AF) who, after a significant investment in their skills can advance to the position of Senior Artist Fabricator (SAF).

Primary Trade Skills Required

An AF is responsible for having a proficient working knowledge of most, if not all, of the following trade skills to succeed at MAD FAB:

  • Sculpture: The ability to create a 3D form in a variety of materials using an assortment of hand and power tools, common materials include: foam, clay, and epoxy, among others.
  • Mold-making: Creating a negative from different materials that is used to create positives. Common mold styles we use at MAD FAB include: Block molds, hard FRP molds, and multipart silicone molds with reinforcement jackets, among others.
  • Casting Urethane: The knowledge and ability to measure and cast 2 part urethane plastics. The ability to research products and make critical decisions about what products should be used for specific applications.
  • Composites / Fiberglass Laminating: The ability to lay up fiberglass using an assortment of different techniques, tools and resins.
  • Carpentry / Millwork: The ability to create 3D forms from wood products using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Bodywork / Fairing / Sanding: The ability to see and feel the flatness, flushness or texture of a form and manipulate it to a different form using filler and other techniques to fair.
  • Metalwork / Welding: The ability to use welding equipment to bond metals. The skill to make good joints. The ability to use an assortment of hand and power tools for creating 3D forms from metals.
  • Scenic / Theme / Heavy Duty / Auto Painting: The ability to execute a variety of different painting techniques such as spraying heavy duty primers using an HVLP gun, spraying an automotive quality finish using an HVLP gun, scenic and theme painting, and more. Requires fine motor control.
  • CNC, Waterjet, Hot Wire Machines: The ability to plan, design, program and use CNC equipment to cut and carve parts.
  • Vacuum Forming Machine: The Ability to operate and prepare molds for our Vacuum Former

Work Schedule

AF is a full time position. AFs are expected to work, on average, 40 hrs per week. AFs will be expected to work overtime when production schedules dictate overtime is required to meet deadlines. Overtime compensation is paid according to federal and state law. The regular work schedule for all MAD FAB employees is Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30 p.m. There is a 45 minute unpaid break for lunch starting at 12:45 p.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m. AF’s are allowed two paid 15-minute breaks per workday. Further explanation of the break policy is in the employee handbook. There are often abnormal work hours because we work in the construction and theme park industries. Compensation (shift differential) for abnormal work hours is further explained in the employee handbook. It is a requirement of this position that the AF be available for abnormal work hours which can include second and third shift and also working late, early, long shifts or doubles.

Performance / Work Quality

MAD FAB works directly with some of the largest and most prolific companies in the world such as Disney and Universal, therefore a certain level of quality of our product is required. AFs at MAD FAB will be critiqued on the quality of their work and methods with which they produce it. AFs may be terminated for performance and quality issues.

The AF along with any and all MAD FAB employees agree to work for their employer (MAD Creative Fabrication) in good faith, act to protect their employer’s interests, not make secret profits at their employer’s expense, not disclose confidential information and not use their employer’s time for their own self-serving purposes. Employees are also expected to carry out their tasks and achieve a standard of skill and competence that can reasonably be expected of someone with their experience and training, including not causing injury or damage in the course of their work. This includes working with focus and diligence. Off topic discussion, socializing, using cell phone or computer for personal use and wasting time while on the clock shall be seen as a violation of this fiduciary duty and grounds for immediate termination.
