The North St. Louis SWCD is hiring up to 45 watercraft inspectors to conduct watercraft inspections at public water access around Northern St. Louis and Lake counties during the 2023 boating season. These lakes include (but not limited to) Ely, Ore-Be-Gone, the Sturgeon chain, Pelican, Crane, Vermilion, Burntside, Shagawa, Fall, Snowbank, Moose, White Iron, Johnson, One Pine, and Birch. Inspectors work can work from May-October (with flexible start/stop dates), primarily on weekends and holidays, flexible scheduling, and up to 40hrs/week available.

Job Description: Watercraft Inspectors serve to inform and educate the public to the threats of ecologically harmful AIS to Minnesota’s waters and teach boaters how to self-inspect their watercraft. Information will be entered into a tablet (provided) and uploaded daily to an inspection database.

Level 1 Watercraft Inspector: MNDNR trained watercraft inspector. Responsible for public education, watercraft inspections for Aquatic Invasive Species, documentation and reporting, on-site surveys, and sample collection.

Level 2 Watercraft Inspector: MNDNR trained watercraft inspector and decontaminator. A Level 2 inspector will have the same responsibilities as a Level 1 but will also be certified to perform decontamination services using hot, high-pressure water.

Trainings:

Level 1 Watercraft Inspector Training: Must completed MNDNR watercraft inspector training requirements and NSL SWCD training. Combination of online and field training

Level 2 Watercraft Inspector Training: Must completed MNDNR watercraft inspector training requirements and NSL SWCD training. Combination of online and field training

Enhanced Training: Additional trainings will be offered monthly to increase knowledge in areas related to the aquatic invasive species prevention program.

Essential Job Functions:

Level 1 Watercraft Inspector

  • Inspect watercraft for invasive species.
  • Educate the public on invasive species program and issues.
  • Distribute written information to watercraft users.
  • Conduct electronic surveys and thoroughly inspect watercraft.
  • Provide excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with the public.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Maintain strong communication with staff: read weekly updates and attend monthly watercraft inspector meetings.

Level 2 Watercraft Inspector

  • Perform Level 1 watercraft inspector tasks.
  • Operate decontamination units in order to decontaminate watercraft according to MNDNR protocol.
  • Conduct minimal preventative maintenance and cleaning on decontamination units and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Able to operate tablet devises, and input digital information
  • Available to work weekends, weekdays and holidays on a regular basis throughout employment (Approximately May through October) between 6am – 5 pm.
  • A Valid Class D Driver’s License, and reliable transportation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior watercraft inspection and decontamination experience
  • Enthusiasm for outdoor recreation and ecosystem health
  • Prior Education and/or Customer Service Experience
  • Knowledge of federal and state statutes, rules and policies applicable to aquatic invasive species, employment and safety

Physical Requirements

Must be able to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time. Squatting and bending required 50% of the time in this job. Must be able to bend/stoop, squat/crouch, climb, kneel and twist. Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions, and around moving equipment. Lifting heavy objects required 20% of the time when a Level 2 Watercraft Inspector.
