The City of Olathe is currently seeking a Wastewater Treatment Process Operator to join our Environmental Services team of dedicated and passionate employees. About the Role:
A Wastewater Treatment Process Operator is a key position that works with a trained team, and independently at times, to perform a variety of skilled computer, laboratory and field work, and ensures the proper operation of pumps, valves, motors and other equipment for regulatory compliance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Process Operator I or II

  • Inspect, monitor, and document plant and remote facility operations by reading and interpreting information provided by the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, meters, gauges, and other field instrumentation; perform general plant facility maintenance including cleaning and repairing plant facilities; perform visual checks of pumps, valves, motors and other equipment; collaborates with operation and maintenance team to troubleshoot plant process and equipment; routinely must collaborate with Plant Maintenance operations and maintenance teams.

  • Collect samples and perform a variety of process and regulatory water quality tests as part of a certified field laboratory; complete associated documentation for sample collection and analysis; work closely with the City’s Environmental Laboratory on testing requirements and techniques.

  • Maintain accurate plant operation logs and reports; perform and document mathematical calculations; utilize a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word), Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database, Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and the SCADA system. Must be able to communicate effectively and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Operate assigned vehicles and equipment such as fork-lifts and pallet jacks for chemical receiving; assists with snow removal including driving a snowplow as required. Wastewater operators are required to participate in city-wide snow removal efforts.

  • Adhere to safe work practices and procedures; review chemical safety data sheets; demonstrate proper use of safety equipment, including a cartridge respirator, confined space entry and fall protection equipment; participate in required safety training.

  • Work weekends, holidays, evenings and nights as required; perform on-call duties and overtime as required.

  • Have the ability to work in all types of weather conditions and follow all safety requirements.

Process Operator II

A Process Operator II is responsible for all essential job functions described for a Process Operator I to include the ability to communicate effectively; follow written and oral instructions; train, mentor and develop newer staff.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
Process Operator I: is a great entry-level position for someone looking to get into the Wastewater Treatment field to gain experience about the industry and impact the environment and community. This position best suits someone who has mechanical skills, strong organizational skills, is analytical, can work effectively with a team and can communicate and collaborate well with others. Previous teamwork experience with similar responsibilities preferred.

Process Operator II: requires a minimum of one-year experience in water or wastewater plant operation or maintenance; requires strong organizational, analytical, teamwork, communication, and mechanic skills. is for someone who is looking to build on their career in Wastewater Treatment.

Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Specialized education in mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, mechanics, hydraulics, computer technology, laboratory, or applied science is desirable.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATES
Process Operator I: Possession of or ability to obtain a Wastewater Class I Operator Certification from the State of Kansas required within 24 months of employment.

Process Operator II: Possession of or ability to obtain a Wastewater Class II Operator Certification from the State of Kansas required.

The position level will be established based on the selected candidate’s experience & education based on their individual experience, skills and proficiency in the varied areas of work.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Regular Work Shift
Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm
Rotating On Call and Weekend Shift
Monday-Friday 5:30am-2:00pm for a 2-week period every 4 to 6 weeks

  • Perform assigned treatment plant rounds to inspect, monitor and document plant operations by reading and interpreting information by the SCADA system, visual observations of tanks and tests, and other instrumentation.
  • Inspect, monitor and document remote facilities and lift stations; address or report abnormal conditions.
  • Operate, adjust, and maintain all pumps, valves, motors and other equipment required to maintain appropriate operations; receive and unload chemical deliveries.
  • Maintain, compile and update plant and remote facilities operation logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operational activities. Must be able to communicate effectively as well as follow written and oral instructions.
  • Collect samples; perform a variety of routine wastewater quality laboratory tests for process control and regulatory compliance; complete associated documentation for sample collection and analysis; work closely with the laboratory on testing requirements.
  • Perform general plant facility maintenance such as cleaning and repairing plant facilities as required.
  • Ability to work weekends, overtime, regular days off or holidays as assigned or needed and carry on-call phone as required after initial training.
  • Respond to emergency alarms and calls as required.
  • Operate assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Assist with snow removal as required, including operating snow blower and snow plow.
  • Accept a responsible role in implementing the safety culture of the department; adhere to safe work practices and procedures; review chemical MSD sheets. Must be able to demonstrate proper use of and use proper safety equipment, including respirator and participate in required safety training. Correctly wear personal protective equipment for appropriate situations.
  • Utilize a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Word) XLIMs database, and erPortal work order tracking system; learn new software programs as they become introduced.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Experience & Qualification Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Experience: Entry level position requiring strong organizational, analytical, teamwork, communication and mechanical skills. Previous team work experience with responsibilities preferred.

Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Wastewater treatment plant operation and or maintenance experience is preferred. Specialized education in mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, mechanics, hydraulics, computer technology, laboratory, or applied science is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a Wastewater Class I Certification from the Kansas Department of Health & Environment within 18 months. Class B CDL with tanker endorsement within 12 months.
