NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work in preventative and corrective maintenance to include installation and repairs of industrial equipment with plants of the water and waste water systems at treatment facility or lift station.

An employee in this classification is responsible for performing assignments of more than average difficulty involving the maintenance and repair activities on a variety of plant equipment, systems, and machinery, some of which is highly complex associated with water and wastewater treatment plants. Assigned tasks require the employee to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment, utilizing manufacturer's operation and maintenance manuals to troubleshoot, and repairing plant equipment or machinery. Under direction from the Plant Maintenance Supervisor, work assignments are general in nature and the employee is expected to work independently in selecting proper methods and procedures to correct work problem in completing maintenance and repair tasks. The employee may be assigned to lead other mechanics or maintenance workers and provide orientation, guidance and training in the proper procedures and safe methods to be used in repairing and maintaining a variety of equipment. Under general supervision, work is reviewed while in progress, through observation, conferences, and reports submitted, and upon completion through results obtained.

Examples of Duties



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs mechanical work in installing and/or making repairs to engines, pumps, controls, and compressors
  • Troubleshoots and performs repairs on a variety of motors, engines, valves, gas systems, chemical systems and related equipment and machinery used in plant operations
  • Checks pumps, motors, filters, belts, compressors, connections, oil levels, temperature, and other necessary maintenance tasks
  • Monitors subordinates engaged in the performance of maintenance, repair, and adjustments to equipment and machinery
  • Identifies and corrects the more difficult and complex causes of system failures; assists in the preparation of sketches for system layouts and installation
  • Orients, guides and trains subordinate technical personnel in proper procedures and safe methods for performing work assignments
  • Responds to emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies
  • Uses computers and available computer software for maintenance management
  • Performs related work as required

Requirements



EDUCATION
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalency supplemented by special courses in mechanical repair and maintenance
  • PROOF OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)


EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Five (5) years fulltime paid experience (or equivalent) in general mechanical equipment maintenance and repair which must include experience with utility plant equipment.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid Florida C.D.L. Class B with endorsements for air brakes with an acceptable driving record
  • Class "C" Florida Water Pollution Control Operators Association Certificate in Maintenance of Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection systems, preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, manual or power tools
  • Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements
  • Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors under varying temperatures, inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions
  • Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle
  • Ability to climb and descend stairways and ship ladders at unusual heights of up to 40 feet
  • Ability to hear within normal audio range, with or without correction
  • Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to withstand exposure to the following conditions without stress: excessive noise, unpleasant odors, chemicals/other environmental substances, blood borne pathogens
  • If applicable: Perform work at locations with exposure over, in and around water, which may not be accessible to the physically handicapped

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, methods, materials and practices utilized in the field of mechanical maintenance
  • General knowledge of carpentry, masonry, and building maintenance work and related mechanical trades operations
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions, including those encountered while working near high voltage service
  • Ability to interpret and work from technical sketches and blueprints; locate, define and repair defects in system failures and equipment
  • Ability to install, alter, repair, and maintain sewer collection and distribution system
  • Ability to train and lead others engaged in performing work assignments
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to prepare and submit clear and concise reports, both orally and in writing
  • Skill in use and care of standard tools, equipment, and testing devices used in the field
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, the general public and City officials
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing to individuals as well as groups
  • Ability to withstand pressure of competing priorities and varied responsibilities and work efficiently and effectively to develop win-win solutions
