Responsibilities:
The Underwriter/QA Analyst is responsible for serving in a dual role in underwriting production and quality assurance. This is an opportunity for an Underwriter to participate in quality assurance/audit reviews of select underwriting transactions. Stop loss experience is required, but we will train in captives. This position is primarily an individual contributor role under minimal supervision to achieve assigned production and QA goals.

Key functions include but are not limited to:

The Underwriter/QA Analyst Analyst will serve dual responsibilities in the following areas:
  • Underwriting Production: Seasonally, you will focus on underwriting the company’s portfolio of stop loss business by analyzing and selecting risks based on qualified underwriting criteria that adhere to the company’s established underwriting guidelines. You will work cross-functionally with clinical, actuarial, claims and distribution to carry through renewal business strategies and to negotiate complex cases in a professional and thoughtful manner.
  • Quality Assurance: This position will also serve as the lead underwriting quality assurance analyst in the traditional Employee Stop Loss segment of Berkley Accident and Health. In this capacity, you will facilitate and conduct regular quality assurance reviews of randomly selected underwriting transactions with the intent of identifying any potential issues or areas of improvement. The focus of such reviews will be ensuring underwriting adherence to established guidelines, policies and procedures. Regular communication of audit outcomes will be reviewed with senior underwriting leadership, and recommendations will be made for future training, development, or corrective actions.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • A thorough understanding of stop loss market dynamics, risk management strategies, and a strong desire to stay ahead of emerging risks in the market. Prior experience working with employer stop loss captives preferred, but will train.
  • 5+ years of progressive Stop Loss Underwriting experience
  • 2+ years of quality assurance/internal audit experience or CIA certification, preferred; open to an Underwriter willing to delve into the quality assurance/audit side
  • Ability to mentor and train less experienced underwriters and underwriting support staff

  • Ability to be proactively independent while still working in a team environment
  • Confidence and a developed skillset in the areas of math, communication and negotiation.
  • Must exhibit professional behavior at all times while representing or being identified as an employee of the company
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all operational areas, management and staff to further the company’s mission
  • Strong consulting and interpersonal skills with an ability to interact with brokers, clients and service vendors
  • Ability to travel to staff offices periodically, and for external business needs 10%
