The Tutor Specialist (Lead Tutor) provides learning strategies and academic support for a specific content area. Works with the Learning Center Coordinators and/or content area faculty to assess student needs and to develop and implement learning interventions for individuals and small groups in the content area. Supports the retention and academic success of the College's students. Integrates knowledge of adult learning theory with practical application to support students' study skills and content area knowledge and skills. Provides direct student support.

The Tutor Specialist (Lead Tutor) fulfills the purpose above in the content area to provide professional tutoring to CCC students in the following areas: Content Knowledge, Processes & Procedures relevant to the discipline, Vocabulary, Communicating effectively with instructors regarding deadlines and assignments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Tutor students in specific subject area, such as Math, Science, Communications, Accounting.

Set tutoring goals with students for individual tutoring sessions.

Ensure that electronic records of students Writing Center sessions are maintained to enable data analysis.

Consult with student's instructors, when necessary, to determine areas to be tutored and best practices for assisting individual students.

Consult with College staff and/or faculty, when necessary, to determine disability accommodations and best practices for individual students.

Maintain cooperative relationships with College faculty and staff to best support student needs.

Plan, design, and implement tutoring plan for students with recurring appointments.

Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings.

Input confidential data and maintain safeguards around confidential and/or sensitive documents and files.

Participate in classroom visits to market Writing Center and Learning Center services.

Refer students, as appropriate, to additional campus services such as the Disability Resource Center, Counseling, Advising, etc.

AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas. May provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in area of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Equivalent to Associate's Degree in the subject area or related field OR any satisfactory combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.

Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, verbally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability to work directly with students to improve content-area.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in the subject area.

Familiarity with tutoring principles and practices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as papers, files, boxes, equipment, computers, etc., and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required approximately 25% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, standard office equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Most of work period occurs under usual office working conditions where the noise level is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noise. Some nights and weekends may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of the Department Chair, with day-to-day oversight provided by the Learning Center Coordinators and/or department faculty.
