Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Technician 3 to support the Administrative Contracts division within the Contract Services Office. This position performs typical engineering technician functions including compiling, organizing, and interpreting data and calculations that are critical to WSDOT initiatives. This research aids the agency in avoiding project delays and higher procurement costs, reducing the potential for negative public scrutiny, and reducing the risk of procurement protests or claims. This position is a key contributor to the efficient, organized, and timely support of the Contract Services Office.

Note: This is an in-training position, allowing candidates to be considered at the Transportation Technician 2 or 3 level depending upon their qualifications. Candidates who qualify at the 2 level will enter a formal in-training plan that offers a career path to the Transportation Technician 3 level through on-the-job training and development.

Transportation Technician 2: $50,592 - $68,076 annually, depending on qualifications.
Transportation Technician 3: $57,324 - $77,028 annually, depending on qualifications.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician 3 will:


  • Organize and maintain electronic contracts filing system, project records and assist contract administrators with project set up, closeouts, documentation, and archiving.
  • Collect, compile, organize and assemble technical documents, project and progress reports, procurement documents and contract exhibits.
  • Check mathematical calculations and review contract submittals for compliance with specifications.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding project progress, open dates, and other data.
  • Attend meetings in person or virtually and take technical notes related to project scopes of work, schedules, and budget estimates.
  • Independently handle basic Public Disclosure Requests (PDR) that involve mining information from CSO databases and other readily available information.
  • Verify funding and financial information in TRAINS.
Qualifications
To be considered for the Transportation Technician 2 level the following are required:
  • An associate degree in civil engineering technology, surveying, drafting, or other closely related field.
    OR
  • Completion of an accredited vocational/technical program consisting of at least 1,200 instructional hours in Civil Engineering Technology, surveying, drafting, structural detailing, engineering design, or closely related fields.
    OR
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent.
    OR
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker, one of which must be as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2.

To be considered for the Transportation Technician 3 level the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.
    OR
  • One (1) year of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work and a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent and an Associates Degree or Vocational Certificate in a related field.
    OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
    OR
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT).
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Working knowledge of government contracting including a depth of understanding of FAR, RCW/WAC, and all relevant contract types (e.g., CPFF/NHR/TONHR/LS, etc.).
  • Experience with agreement development and administration.
  • Working experience with various systems, such as but not limited to ECMS, TRAINS, AFRS.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
