Trainee Service Delivery Driver
Grade: Driver (Ex-EMR)
Salary: £30,078 per annum rising to £40,104 per annum

At Northern, we play a vital role across the North by providing a reliable and friendly train service that helps hundreds of thousands of people to go do their thing. That's over 2,000 services every day, travelling to over 500 destinations.

We're here to make a positive impact for the North. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and do whatever it takes to make our customers’ lives easier. A place that encourages everyone to learn, grow and develop so we can all be our best every single day.

We’re now recruiting for Trainee Service Drivers to join us at our Neville Hill, Train Car Centre, in Leeds. So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.

As part of the Trainee Service Driver team, you will play a vital role within our Train Care Centres and be responsible for moving our trains within the boundaries. You’ll be responsible for driving, shunting, light maintenance, and other tasks such as fault finding and reporting. Ensuring you keep people safe; you will be trained in and regularly assessed to ensure you continue to apply and conform to the railway rules and operating procedures. You will also be responsible for checking that the train environment is up to our market leading standards.

It’s about working on our Train Care Centres as safely and efficiently as possible. Our trains and Train Care Centres operate 7 days a week, you need to be flexible enough to deal with the ever-changing demands. It’s vital that you’re adaptable and that you live within a 45-minute drive of our Train Care Centre.

You don’t need previous driving experience as our training course offers all the training you need. You’ll spend your first 6 weeks taking part in classroom based learning in either Leeds or Manchester, followed by a minimum of 6 months training within our Train Care Centres with our full support as you develop your skills.

If you fancy doing your thing at Northern we’ll expect 100% commitment from you on this rewarding yet demanding programme, but our Training Team will be with you all the way when it comes to ongoing assessments and knowledge checks. You need to be able to work as part of a team and maintain optimum concentration at all times.

Successful candidates will need to be responsible and committed to providing excellent service through efficiency, high standards and most of all, safety. Excellent communication skills are an essential attribute for Service Drivers to ensure you work closely with the team around you. What’s important is an ability to stay calm and to think on your feet in sometimes challenging situations.

And because you’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the mornings until late at night, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 45 minute’s drive of our depot.

Ready to help our customers go do their thing? You can get started by telling us more about what your thing is. All you need to do is complete our online application form, answering all questions fully to demonstrate your suitability to the role.

Our selection process includes all candidates being shortlisted and those successful will be invited to attend an interview. If you meet the standard we’re looking for, you will then be invited to attend a Driver Psychometric Assessment (based in Leeds city centre). The final stage is a safety critical medical assessment that covers general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing, as we have a zero tolerance on the railway.

Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love. So, you’ll be able to make the most of:

  • Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
  • Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
  • 75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 2 years with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.

  • Cycle to Work Scheme - save up to 42% on the cost of a bike, while also spreading your payments throughout the year.
  • Recognition Programmes - from our Loyalty Awards events to our Proud to be Northern Awards, we make sure our people know they’re appreciated.
