The Trades Maintenance Specialist is devoted to providing licensed repair, maintenance and equipment operation for an assigned city maintenance or operational function. Incumbents provide specialized general maintenance in support of assigned City department(s) or maintenance function. Work may include performing advanced repairs of buildings, grounds and/or equipment, requiring a trades license; operating assigned equipment; providing emergency response and/or 24/7 coverage; maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced maintenance, repairs and testing of HVAC, electrical and/or plumbing equipment and facilities; operates required tools and equipment; performs work in accordance with operational and safety policies and procedures.
  • Receives, prioritizes and schedules maintenance and work requests; determines required tools, equipment and supplies; identifies and requests supplies and inventory.
  • Responds to customer requests and concerns; troubleshoots, diagnoses and identifies issues; recommends and implements corrective action, repairs and/or equipment replacement to resolve issues.
  • Monitors work provided by vendors and contractors; reviews work to ensure it meets specifications, contractual obligations, quality standards and safety requirements.
  • Inspects equipment, tools, materials, facilities, building systems and/or grounds to ensure functionality and safety; secures and opens facilities/spaces; reports and/or corrects issues to resolve operational deficiencies and/or unsafe conditions.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains records, logs, reports and documentation; monitors supplies and parts inventory; initiates requests of stock to replenish inventory.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience
Associate's Degree in area of assignment and three years of experience in area of training, with prior instructional or lead worker experience in the subject being taught.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications


  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or ability to obtain within 30 days.

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); frequent exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, movement restrictions, intense noise and travel.
