The Town of Bar Harbor, Maine is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Town Manager. Bar Harbor is a year-round community with more than 5,000 residents that is well known for its natural beauty, proximity to Acadia National Park, its working waterfront, and historic villages. The community is also a popular destination attracting those who own second homes and millions of tourists visiting the community for a short-term stay.
Bar Harbor has a Town Council/Town Manager/Town Meeting form of government which is an important part of the fabric of the community.Bar Harbor has a current municipal budget of $25 million, including schools, with 75 full-time municipal employees pluspart-time and seasonal employees.
Working to keep its small-town character despitebig town issues, Bar Harbor is looking for anexperiencedleader to assist in planning for the future. With a new Comprehensive Plan pending, Bar Harbor is poised to make decisions on a wide-ranging number of issues includingdevelopment, infrastructure, growth, the environment and quality of life. While Bar Harbor and other communities on Mount Desert Island boast many assets that make this coastal area of Maine desirable to so many people, these communities are also facing similar issues, constraints, and challenges that will require a collective lens and collaborative solutions moving forward.
Candidates should possess excellent written and oral communication skills, theability to engage in complexdiscussionswith residents of varying viewpoints, strategic planning experience and problem-solving skills, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, and demonstrated leadership ability. Bar Harbor seeks to support a manager as a community member who engages and actively listens in this role.A transparent, open, collaborative and team-oriented management style will be an absolute requirement.
A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or similar relevant field is preferred; a Master’s degree is a plus. Experience in municipal management is preferred, but candidates with executive level management, finance or comparable experience are encouraged to apply.
