General Statement of Job

Under minimal direct supervision, performs responsible administrative work in planning, directing and coordinating tourism programs within Spotsylvania County. Work involves encouraging the expansion of existing programs and fostering the establishment of approved tourism events in the County. Employee is responsible for implementation of the County’s Tourism Strategic Plan, promoting attributes of the area, preparing reports and presentations concerning tourism development activities, and maintaining a database of tourism contacts both inside and outside the state of Virginia. Employee must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in developing events, marketing strategies and associated materials. Employee must also exercise considerable tact, courtesy and professionalism in frequent contact with business representatives, tourism liaisons and the general public. Works collaboratively with the Director of Community Engagement and Tourism to develop and implement strategies for comprehensive, effective and proactive communications with County residents, employees, businesses, visitors, and other target audiences. Promotes the County as a desirable tourist destination through advertising, coordination of special events, the Visitor’s Center and County Museum. Reports to the Director of Community Engagement.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and directs the activities of personnel assigned to the Tourism office; reviews and evaluates employee's performance, selects new employees, and initiates disciplinary actions.
  • Develops, plans, organizes and implements tourism marketing strategies for the County.
  • Oversees, manages, and updates the County’s tourism and museum websites and social media platforms.
  • Directs the generation and distribution of promotional marketing material using various advertising media and makes cost effective media buys to promote County tourism.
  • Prepares and monitors tourism budgets; secures funds and other resources and controls expenditures.
  • Participates in County and regional tourism development activities, and other activities as appropriate.
  • Serves as County liaison with appropriate local, state and Federal agencies.
  • Travels locally, regionally, and throughout the United States to maintain the County's outreach program and encourage tourism expansion in or relocation to the County.
  • Prepares tourism brochures for distribution to interested business and venues specific to the travel and tourism industry.
  • Directs the office in providing services, resources and programs to meet the evolving need for tourism growth revitalization and reinvestment throughout the County.
  • Plans, formulates and recommends policies and programs which will further overall tourism objectives.
  • Attends conferences, seminars, workshops, classes, lectures, etc., as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of tourism development; attends professional, civic, and social gatherings, as appropriate, to represent and promote interests of County and to collect information pertinent to advancement of interests of the County.
  • Promotes and coordinates activities and resources involved in attraction, retention, and expansion of tourism, and County revenue.
  • Manages special initiatives as assigned by Director of Community Engagement & Tourism particularly those characterized as unique, confidential, complex and time-sensitive.
  • Oversees the Visitor’s Center and County Museum, events and staff as needed.
  • Maintains data, files, articles, photographs, and other records necessary for aggressive, efficient, and effective management of duties and responsibilities.
  • Supports tourism functions through research, writing, editing, photography, video production and graphic design.
  • Provides regularly scheduled updates to the Director of Community Engagement & Tourism.
  • Establish, promote, and maintain effective lines of communication with employees, the public and government officials.
  • Assists with internal and external communications in the county Tourism office. Works with the Virginia Tourism Office to promote Spotsylvania County as a Virginia tourism destination; promotes the County through statewide tourism programs, client visits, client leads, promotional publications and the state’s website.
  • Evenings and weekends are required for some events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Advertising, Marketing, Communications, Hospitality Tourism or closely related field and six (6) to nine (9) years of experience in tourism, marketing, public relations management, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

A valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

Special Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of tourism, event planning and facilitating public events that will generate interest and revenue for the County.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in business solicitation, economic development and promotion.
  • Ability to work with businesses, volunteer groups and other stakeholders to further strengthen the mission of the County’s tourism program.
  • Knowledge of grant and press release writing.
  • Proficiency in content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Proven track record in planning, managing and executing large-scale tourism-related events.
  • Experience administering comprehensive marketing campaigns to include print, website and digital formats.
  • Demonstrated skills in graphic design, photography, videography and ability to network with community members and groups.
  • Knowledge of the available resources of the County.
  • Skill in the collection, analysis and presentation of tourism data.
  • Ability to organize work flow and coordinate activities for short-term and long-term projects.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion in establishing, applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret tourism data and to make sound recommendations from the information.
  • Ability to supervise subordinate personnel.
  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments and/or directions to subordinates and assistants, and receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to prepare budgets, reports, correspondence, memorandum, etc., conforming to all rules of punctuation, format, and grammar.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems; to deal with nonverbal symbolism in its most difficult phases; to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables; to comprehend the most abstruse classes of concepts.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to use and interpret personnel, marketing terminology and language.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under varying levels of stress.
  • Ability to community professionally and respectfully.
