Job Description

Position Summary:

The Toolroom machinist sets up and operates lathe/mills machines, grinders and other type of machine tools. Works to close tolerance from tool design drawing, sketches, part print or verbal instructions.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Designs, machines and assembles tools such as drill fixtures; checking fixtures and drill plates involving irregular contours and locating points in more than one plate; fixtures for holding compound angle cuts through plates; centering and locating devices and special purpose tools.
  • Improvises minimum cost tooling for one-time or rush jobs.
  • Verifies alignment and tolerances of moving parts, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators and thickness gauges.
  • Reviews and understands blueprints and specifications for machined and/or fabricated parts with special focus on stamping die components.
  • Operates CNC lathe to turn components.
  • Performs precise cuttings of tooling, and uses various gages and micrometers as required.
  • Troubleshoots and follows-through with solution to problem.
  • Complies with all company safety rules and regulations.


Required Skills and Experience:


  • Five years of technical Die Design Concept and Toolroom Machinist experience.
  • Must be capable of working effectively with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Attention to detail, high energy individual. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and results oriented. Strong communication skills.
  • Solid experience in operating a variety of manual and CNC controlled machinery to produce precision parts and components to exact specifications.
  • Ability to review and understand engineering drawings, customer provided part drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished parts, sequence of operations and set up requirements.
  • Use moderate physical effort in the use of hand tools, wrenches, and hoists, pry bars, hammers, etc.
  • Carry weights of up to 50 pounds occasionally for short periods.
  • Manufacturing and Machine shop experience.
  • Mathematical Skill – Demonstrate the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Blueprint Reading & Interpretation Demonstrate the ability to dependably read and interpret the following: drawing terms; call outs; symbols and/or descriptions; types of lines; front view; side view; top view; section view; types of radii; tolerances (min. and max.); external thread; internal thread; surface finish; fastener-related specifications.
  • Basic Visual & Dimensional Inspection Demonstrate the ability to inspect parts reliably using the following tools: caliper (dial and digital); micrometer (stand, blade, and disk); dial drop indicator; test indicator; comparator; pin gage; gage block set; any functional gages applicable to the operator.
  • Workmanship – Demonstrate the ability to identify and take appropriate action to prevent, correct, or reject the following conditions on die and tools parts: cracks; nicks, scratches and dents
  • Communication – Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with team members to achieve cooperation and assistance needed to resolve problems and attain maximum productivity.

Education


  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or equivalent.
  • Certification/Degree in a related field preferred.

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $31.25 to $47.00 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company’s Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 1X the Company’s bonus multiple, based on the Company’s performance in the applicable quarter. Employees will receive 80 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company’s 401(k) plan.
