ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES
  • Performs complex design investigation, analysis, feasibility studies and CAD design for new tools using customer supplied data.
  • Assists Sales group with process development and vendor selection during quoting process.
  • Review of designs from outside tooling vendors with an emphasis on GD&T, cosmetic, and productivity requirements.
  • Review of fixture designs with internal Engineering department to assist in the manufacturing feasibility of design.
  • Typical tools designed for hard stamping, weld fixtures, assembly fixtures, brake tooling, inspection fixtures, etc.
  • Studies specifications and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve or improve design issues related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and costs of tool.
  • Tracks progress of new and outsourced tooling with regular report outs to management.
  • Performs Tooling runoffs at vendors using buyoff checklist to qualify tooling before shipping.
  • Works with internal teams to resolve issues that may be related to quality, productivity, or process improvement.
  • Coordinates in house PPAP trials and assists Tooling Department to ensure the production readiness of launched tooling.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four-year technical degree preferred, but a four-year tool and die apprenticeship is acceptable with some technical courses at college level.
  • Preferred of 5 years of tool design experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Preferred of 5 years of tool build or repair experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Solid modeling experience needed; SolidWorks preferred.
  • AutoCAD skills required for tooling design and engineering change activities.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills written and verbal.
  • Must have the ability to work with technical and non-technical employees and outside vendors/suppliers.
  • Must be able to project manage the purchase and build of inside and outside tooling.
  • Must be familiar with weld symbols and practices.
  • Must be flexible and decisive in solving problems in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with welding and machining processes required.
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerance.
  • Experience in prototype production and testing methods desirable.
  • Must be able to manage tooling projects from conception to production launch.
