Position Summary:

The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CoECS) at Arkansas State University (A-State) invites applications for the position of full-time instructor of the Data Science & Data Analytics (DSDA) program. This is a nine-month (with possible summer compensation) appointment beginning in Fall 2023. The position reports to the Director of the Data Science and Data Analytics program

The DSDA is a joint program involving six colleges: College of Agriculture, College of Education & Behavioral Science, College of Engineering & Computer Science, College of Liberal Arts & Communication, College of Nursing & Health Professions, and College of Sciences & Mathematics. The DSDA program will include various application domains which are under development and supported by the participating colleges. Domains could be in disciplinary areas or in thematic areas. Domains under development are in the disciplinary areas of computer science, engineering, life science, and social sciences, as well as in thematic areas such as bioinformatics, sustainability and renewable energy, geospatial technologies and health care. An undergraduate certificate in Data Analytics is also part of the program and is open to all majors (except those in DSDA). All courses in the DSDA major are existing courses except those with a DATA prefix

This program will be housed in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The CoECS offers ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees in the areas of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering as well as master’s degrees in Engineering Management, Engineering, and Computer Science, and undergraduate degrees in Engineering Technology and Computer Science. The university’s location in Northeast Arkansas provides opportunities for partnerships with industry in software development, networks/communication, manufacturing, agriculture/food production, and steel all of which have needs for Data Scientists and Data Analysts

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities will include lecturing, coordinating key components of a student’s course structure, such as assessments and project reviews, and acting as their technical resource and inspiration as they work through the program
  • Instructors need to be comfortable guiding students through applied and experiential learning experiences
  • Primarily teach DSDA courses
  • Some courses in Computer Science may need to be taught from time to time
  • Applicant should be open to developing and offering some DSDA courses online. The preferred mode of delivery for most online courses in the college is synchronous delivery of lectures with on-campus courses, accompanied by electronic archival of the lectures
  • The teaching load of this position is normally 15 hours per semester
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Applicants should be able to primarily teach courses in the DSDA program
  • Strong knowledge of Data Science in R, SQL, Python, starting from data manipulation and management to Machine Learning techniques
  • Preferred Knowledge of theories and practices in the areas of AI and Machine Learning
  • Preferred experience with pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, etc.
  • Preferred experience in C++ and Java
  • Participate in service activities within the CoECS. The successful candidate should expect to be involved in recruitment and retention activities for the DSDA program
  • Applicants should be able to assist the DSDA director in organizing and holding DSDA steering committee meetings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Computational Statistics, Advanced Data Analysis, or related field from an accredited institution at the start of employment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
