Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides a broad range of physical assistance to children including helping them off and placing them on school bus; transferring to and from wheelchairs, adjustment of braces and other special devices and apparel, etc. as may be required due to the difficulties and disabilities of the individual child. May assist teacher by lifting, carrying, walking the children, or supporting them within the classroom setting.
  • Oversees and assists the children in their personal needs, including toileting, changing diapers, cleaning, washing, etc. May help children in developing good personal habits including toilet training, etc.
  • Performs a variety of duties in the classroom to set up facilities for the teacher, including arts and crafts projects, special games, and other teaching exercises and instructions planned by the teacher. May carry out other supporting activities such as cutting out designs and making paper displays and other patterns for the children as may be requested by the teacher.
  • Assists in the overseeing of "circle" time, working with the children so they are occupied with play, music instruction, and for other activities as directed by the teacher designed to keep the children occupied and happy. Periodically, might lead the "circle" time and other related activities under the supervision of the teacher and/or teacher's assistant.
  • Assists during lunchtime by helping children with their meals, or preparing meals, including heating food, etc. Prepares snacks and helps children during meal and snack time. Cleans up areas after meals and snacks, etc.
  • Provides help to children with hearing difficulties including testing and changing batteries, escorting them to Audiology Department, helping Audiologist in testing and related activity by playing specifically designed games as instructed, and other related duties.
  • Must cooperate and participate fully with Jawonio and/or OCFS and NYS Justice Center during an investigation or inspection, including making verbal and written statements as requested by the person(s) doing the investigation.
  • Performs a broad variety of miscellaneous support functions including photocopying of art work, reports, notes, and other materials. May maintain or prepare routine records and files, and carry out other related administrative functions.

Nonessential Elements

  • May call parents to deliver messages, relay information to them, etc.
  • May collect emergency and medical notes for delivery to clerical staff.
  • Maintains safe, orderly work area and work practices.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Special Note: This position follows the agency’s pre school calendar. The annualized salary is divided into 26 paychecks of equal amount. If an individual leaves, calculations will be made to ensure that the employee has not been overpaid for the amount of hours actually worked.

Background/Formal Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent is required and experience with young child preferred.

Minimum Learning Time: 3 months

Interrelationships: Continual close contact with children; routine contact with parents and other professionals.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of families, co-workers and other community groups.
