ABOUT STANFORD UNIVERSITY AND RESIDENTIAL & DINING ENTERPRISES:

Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing the highest quality services to students and other members of the university community. The Department has an annual operating budget of over $270 million, oversees a 5 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus, provides housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serves over 18,000 daily meals at 30 dining retail locations and over 300,000 meals at Athletic Concessions events, and hosts 20,000 conference guests annually. Additionally, R&DE comprises 735 FTE staff in the following divisions: the Office of the Senior Associate Vice Provost, Student Housing Operations and Stanford Conferences, Stanford Dining, Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Finance & Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology and Communications.

R&DE Information Technology consists of 26 full and part-time staff. The department is organized into six teams: CIO office, Portfolio and Project Management Office, Enterprise Applications, Support Services, Security, and Enterprise Infrastructure. R&DE IT supports over 65 applications and integrations, 2,200 technology assets, and 900+ users. In addition to providing excellence in everything they do, R&DE IT is dedicated to the mission and core values of Residential & Dining Enterprises.

The R&DE IT System Administrator is a member of the R&DE IT Enterprise Infrastructure Team, reporting to the Director of Enterprise Infrastructure, supports the rapid growth and high-availability physical and virtual infrastructure while following industry best practices for security and compliance. We work with R&DE teams, campus partners and vendors to ensure new and existing systems meet the requirements of R&DE. We align existing workflows and anticipate needs based on the overall goals of R&DE, and we are accountable to those we serve, to our teammates and to ourselves for the quality of our work. We are results oriented as we contribute to the R&DE vision of excellence.

The R&DE IT System Administrator will have a significant role in service delivery, and must consider the reliability and security of the computing environment and the needs of the R&DE community to be their highest priorities. They will demonstrate experience maintaining servers, supporting back-up services, administering permission controls and troubleshooting system issues. They will be driven to explore next technology advances in virtualized and on-premises data centers, computing and storage solutions, VMware, Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems, physical and logical networks, security, and desktop and endpoint management. JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, install, configure, and maintain integrity of the operating system environment.


CORE DUTIES*:

  • Install software and utilities for modifications and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.
  • Resolve incident reports as needed for data/network center support.
  • Maintain system security and user accounts.
  • Install, configure, and test devices or servers with supporting hardware, software, and networking components.
  • Provide routine consultation and general of IT support within the department.
  • Ensure data/media recovery by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.
  • Participate in testing, debugging, configuring, and documenting operating systems and software.
  • Monitor, tune and troubleshoot the operating system.
  • Act as liaison with vendors of software and application products, especially with regard to problem diagnosis and resolution.
  • Install, configure, and maintain network devices, cabling, and peripherals as necessary.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or
  • Combination of education and relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with one or more operating systems.
  • Experience installing various hardware platforms and strong skills with most operating system commands/utilities.
  • Familiarity with networked/distributed computing environment concepts.
  • Experience with programming or scripting in any applicable language.
  • Ability to manage shared resources and perform simple tasks.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practice of system configuration management.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to explain applications and operating system fundamentals to others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21>40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposed to high voltage electricity, noise >80dB TWA, confined spaces, hot temperatures, heavy metals.
  • Extended hours and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $82,000 to $85,000 per annum.
