General Statement of Job

Under general supervision of Swim Lesson Coordinator, Special Events & Leisure Programmer. Position is responsible for teaching swimming lessons according to class level to program participants. In addition, will be scheduled as a Lifeguard during pool operating hours. Employee is responsible for the safety of class participants, planning, implementing and delivering effective and qualitative programs for customers of all ages and ability. Must successfully demonstrate service, integrity and pride while working with the general public. Reports to Swim Lesson Coordinator, Special Events & Leisure Programmer or Pool Manager on duty.May – Aug. Swim Lesson schedule will vary between Mon – Fri. 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. / 6 – 8 p.m. May – Sept. Lifeguard schedule will vary between Sun - Sat 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the mission, vision and goals of Spotsylvania County Parks & Recreation Dept.
  • Instructs swimming lessons according to guidelines set forth by Spotsylvania Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Wear proper uniform (County issued) and represent Spotsylvania Parks & Recreation Dept. in a professional manner at all times.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Parks & Recreation Pool Operating Procedures Manual.
  • Provides instruction for the time allotted for each class.
  • Assure safety of all participants at all times;
  • Prepare class lesson plans for assigned classes
  • Instruct classes for a variety of age groups and swimming level competencies;
  • Provide appropriate and professional feedback to students/parents on progress;
  • Maintain class area and equipment, cleaning up after class;
  • Complete administrative tasks. Take attendance, completes certificates and review course evaluations.
  • Provide outstanding customer service to all customers and participants.
  • Be punctual. Responsible for obtaining substitute when unable to report for scheduled shift.
  • Maintain required certifications.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Fulfill function of a Lifeguard during pool operational hours. Refer to Lifeguard Job Description
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

Must be 16 years of age or older.

Swim Instructor II must possess a valid certificate in ARC Lifeguarding, CPR/PR for the Professional Rescuer.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSI) preferred. Experience in teaching swim lessons or coaching swim team preferred.

Must complete in-house swim lesson instructor training upon hire.

Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation, In-service, Bloodborne Pathogens and Sexual Harassment upon hire.

Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and drug screen.

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance that would prove extensive knowledge and /or training in swimming strokes, techniques in teaching the strokes; demonstrates ability to teach others. Certification in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor is preferred. Swim Team experience or the ability to demonstrate skill is required. Must be able to perform all skills taught in lessons for levels in which you instruct. Must complete in-house training upon hire. Must work minimum of 20 hours a week, 3 of the 4 sessions as scheduled and may supplement additional hours as a Lifeguard. Primary responsibility is to the Learn to Swim Program.

Special Requirements

  • Has extensive and thorough knowledge of swimming strokes; able to teach swimming skills to youth and adults.
  • Must have knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Is able to prepare a variety of reports and records; is able to follow instructions.
  • Is able to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
  • Is able to exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in contact with County officials, administration, and the general public.
  • Is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to run, bend, and walk to meet the needs of the position. Tasks require the ability to exert light to medium physical effort and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling. Ability to work outdoors in an aquatics environment. Instructors are required to teach the majority of their lessons from in the water.


Must demonstrate the ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints. Ability to pass lifeguard water test and meet requirements of ongoing drills. Must be able to remain alert. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods. Must be able to withstand outdoor temperatures. Ability to recognize visual and verbal distress signs/actions from potential drowning victim within 10 seconds. Ability to respond to victim in water within 10 seconds. Ability to respond to an emergency situation including but not limited to: water emergency, respiratory or cardiac emergency, minor/major first aid and missing person. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
