Job Summary/Basic Function
The Sustainability Manager is responsible for strategic development and operational management of the university’s sustainability program. The manager is charged to create, coordinate, and implement campus sustainability initiatives and to carry out the President’s Climate Commitment for carbon neutrality via the University’s Climate Action Plan and Campus Sustainability Plan. This position must be able to build strong working relationships with faculty, staff, and students to promote sustainability initiatives and advance Millersville University as a higher education leader in sustainability by integrating sustainability into daily operations, facilities planning and design, research activities, curriculum, and extra-curricular life. The Sustainability manager seeks grant funding, rebate opportunities, builds corporate partnerships, and develops policies and/or procedures while leveraging the UN Sustainability Development Goals in enhancing the university’s sustainability culture.

Annual Salary: $70,000.00 – 85,000.00, plus comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Health insurance – Low bi-weekly premium, with coverage starting on the first day of employment for employee and all dependents.
  • Dental insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents with coverage starting on the first day of employment.
  • Vision insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents with coverage starting on the first day of employment.
  • Group life insurance – Equal to annual salary (up to $50,000) at no cost to the employee.
  • Voluntary Group Life and Accident Insurance – Available for purchase at low rates for additional employee coverage as well as coverage for spouse and children.
  • Long Term Disability Insurance – Available for purchase at low rates with either a 90 or 180-day waiting period.
  • Retirement – 2 plans to choose from.
  • Tuition waiver – For employee, spouse, and dependents.
  • Personal leave – Up to 6 days per year.
  • Vacation leave– Up to 10.4 days accrued per year for first year, increases to 15.6 days per year after 1 year.
  • Sick leave – Up to 15.6 days accrued per year, including up to 5 days per year that can be taken to care for a family member.
  • Holiday leave – 12 days per calendar year.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years of job-related experience in sustainability (for example: energy and water conservation, recycling, waste minimization, sustainable building, landscape design).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of sustainability topics such as energy, water, green IT, indoor air quality, green cleaning, waste, recycling, purchasing, green renovations, social justice?, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience promoting sustainable practices in a diverse work environment.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of independent judgment in the development and implementation of projects and programs.
  • Strong technical, quantitative, and analytical skills
  • Ability to create and implement grassroots initiatives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with administration, faculty and staff, students, consultants, and external organizations.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Web site management.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in environmental studies, biology, engineering.
  • Affiliation with sustainability related professional organizations.
  • Understanding of sustainability best practices for universities and colleges.
  • Knowledge of energy management programs and building automation’s systems (BAS).
  • LEED accreditation.

Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic guidance on operational planning and engagement initiatives. Implement the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (CSAP) activities. Collaborate with key campus personnel, student groups, faculty, staff, and various committees to implement and track all projects in support of the CSAP across a broad spectrum of sustainability topics covered in the United Nations Global Sustainability goals.
  • Promote Millersville University as a higher education leader in sustainability. Proactively communicate and promote sustainability throughout campus. Research and inspire new efforts. Be a positive proponent of change.
  • Analyze and provide guidance and recommendation related to the University’s energy usage, procurement, trending, demand response programs, and general reduction of energy use. Prepare reports and present to various groups. Assist project managers with planning, programing, and implementing capital projects that are energy efficiency focused. Develop energy strategies for new construction projects and major renovation projects. Proactively seek rebates and other incentives for energy saving projects and other initiatives.
  • Manage the Powering the Positive Energy fund grant program. Work closely with key stakeholders to review, prioritize, award, track and communication projects and initiatives with campus community.
  • Work with key student groups, residential life, Student Government Association, and other student-facing offices to develop, implement and maintain sustainability outreach programs.
  • Provide leadership to the Sustainability Committee on institutional sustainability progress, provide input on monthly agendas, facilitate meetings, and assist with strategic university-wide partnerships and initiatives.
  • Work with the grant office and/or faculty members to obtain grants, funding and corporate partnerships for sustainability programs and initiatives.
  • Develop ROIs, cost estimates and budget proposals for recommended programs.
  • Research sustainability issues, respond to surveys, benchmark, collect data and file required reports.
  • Serve as on-call manager after hours, during weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Essential Functions
