Ford Design – Technical Operations turns design vision into reality with an obsession to detail and the art of the possible. As an integral part of Ford Global Design, we deliver theme feasibility, surface geometry, and production-launch appearance quality.

As the Subject Matter Expert in Sheetmetal Class A development, you will mentor global Class A Surface Designers in world class sheet metal surfacing. Additionally, you will use your expertise to evaluate design alternatives, develop surface proposals, and recommend best practices for continual technical maturity development of the global surfacing community.

What you’ll be able to do:

  • Mentor Class A Surface Designers, Surfacing Co-Op Students, FCGs and new hire Ford employees
  • Evaluate surface design alternatives and provides surface solutions / recommendations for core area of expertise
  • Participate in program Digital Surface Reviews and Design Verification reviews to provide a “fresh eyes” surface quality assessment for core area of expertise prior to surface release
  • Act as a “CAD Method Owner” for core area of expertise who identifies CAD methodologies, "Best Practices" and tool solutions; cascade knowledge base and trains department staff
  • High Technical Maturity in Sheetmetal design and highlighting including construction methods, assessment of surface and correction of surface for highlights.
  • Drive resolution of surface data issues by leading power wall and digital reviews
  • Manage surface changes in SDMS (Surface Data Management system)


The minimum requirements we seek:

  • 7+ years of experience in Class A Surfacing (Exterior and Interior commodities, Total Vehicle System Compatibility). Demonstrates creative and artistic insight, and ensure progression of surface data consistent with Design Language
  • Strong technical skills in Class A Surfacing Tools, Data Management and Visualization Tools (e.g. ICEM Surf, CATIA ISD, Alias, Team Center, Reference Manager)
  • High School/GED required

Our preferred requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Strong understanding of Design Development and Feasibility Process, and how they drive the design process through the FC / UPVX / FAA GPDS milestones
  • Understanding of the Craftsmanship, DPA Process and System Compatibility.
  • Proven ability to evaluate design alternatives and provide a recommendation
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to plan and organize work utilizing departmental project management tools (e.g. Surface Tracker, Surface Change Request System, etc.). Able to develop and track a plan to deliver geometry through the GPDS milestones
  • Collaborative attitude for daily interaction with Design Studio, Engineering, Manufacturing and other affected activities
  • Knowledge of Microsoft suite (Power Point and Excel)
