SUMMARY: The AHD Central Supply Technician I is the entry level in the series and incumbents are expected to promote to the II level upon completion of one year of service and completion of the required course specializing in Central Supply procedures. The Central Supply Technician I decontaminates/sterilizes hospital equipment, assembles and wraps surgical trays and kits, operates gas and steam sterilizers, and issues medical supplies to hospital departments. Responsible for ordering and storing surgical and medical supplies in a manner that insures sterility when the product is issued to hospital departments, as required by the governing bodies. Performs related duties as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification, however, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

1. Advises hospital staff on the use of equipment, supplies and materials.

2. Assembles instrument packs, trays and other items used in the operating room and other areas of the hospital requiring sterilization.

3. Issues and distributes supplies, instruments, and equipment to patient-care units throughout the hospital; maintains logs on the location of equipment; makes unit rounds and stocks unit storerooms with predetermined inventory levels of supplies; labels, dates inspects and rotates supplies; returns used non-disposable items to Central Supply for sterilization and recycling.

4. Operates autoclaves, steam and sterilizers, and various other processing equipment; monitors temperature and pressure of steams and sterilizers; conducts tests; keeps batch records on each group of items sterilized.

5. Using the principles of asepsia, disassembles, decontaminates/sterilizes, assembles and/or prepares supplies, instruments, and equipment in the Central Supply and Services department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum Experience: Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to do the job.
