Reports to: Athletic Office Administrator,

Schedule: Variable hours between July 1st and July 31st, 2023

Designation: Staff

Compensation: Hourly pay range: $18 - $21

POSITION SUMMARY:
Hotchkiss Lifeguards provide supervision and ensure safety for all swimmers in our aquatic facility and also the Lake Wononskopomuk. Lifeguards will support daily open swimming and can be called upon to support other guarding needs at the Hotchkiss waterfront if waterfront certified, or for additional event needs at the Hixon Pool. Lifeguards play an instrumental role in maintaining safety for swimmers, and around the pool deck and lake beach. They must be informed about and possess the ability to follow all safety protocols. Vigilance insuring that swimmers follow guidelines and lifeguarding directions at all times is a primary responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Be responsible for signing up for open guarding slots on a weekly schedule.
  • Be proactive in your communications with your supervisor about your availability to provide pool coverage.
  • Be timely, reporting early to your work shifts to prepare, and wearing appropriate apparel ensuring that the pool is open on time.
  • Enforce and explain rules, to ensure the safety of swimmers.
  • Monitor and warn swimmers of unsafe situations or behaviors.
  • Maintain order in swimming areas, monitoring designated areas where swimmers are present, with proper positioning to observe all swimmers, or designated area(s) if there is more than one lifeguard on duty.
  • Respond to emergencies and rescue swimmers in danger of drowning.
  • Perform first aid procedures and CPR if necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the pool deck, recognizing any hazards, and reporting them to the Mars Athletic Center Facility Manager or your supervisor.
  • Be familiar and practiced with the Emergency Action Plan located in the pool office.
  • Remain onsite in the pool, until Safety & Security comes to lock up.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certified.
  • Minimum age of 16 and authorized to work in the United States for Hotchkiss.
  • Possess decisive and confident decision-making ability.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Physically fit, strong and agile to perform rescue needs.
  • Patience and physical stamina are required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, squat, reach, talk and hear.
  • Must be able to lift significant weight to perform rescue needs.
  • Given the persistent risks of the spread of the Covid-19 virus, all employees of the School are required to be fully vaccinated by their first day of work as a condition of employment. Employees who are unable to receive the vaccine due to a disability, medical condition, or a sincerely held religious belief may request an exemption, which will be reviewed by the School to determine the availability of any reasonable accommodations.
