SMSI is looking for a Subject Matter Expert 3 for work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This is a full-time position.

Job Description

Manages and directs the daily tasks required to perform ongoing support of design, construction, startup and/or operations/ maintenance activities of complex high technology systems or projects Renders expert opinions on engineering and technical issues, provides recommendations to project design and construction teams in specific areas of expertise. Provides independent reviews and assessments in areas of specialized expertise and provides guidance to project teams in delivering results on projects of complex, high-technology nature. Interfaces with management personnel and customer representatives. Develops and enforces work standards, assigns schedules, reviews work quality, communicates goals, objectives, and policies of the organization to subordinates. Provides leadership for the project team, coordinates with the functional organizations, and supervises senior personnel within the project organization.

The Conduct of Operations Mentor will serve as a senior advisor to the Chief Operating Officer for Weapons Production and also the Operational Readiness Division Leader regarding nuclear operations, formality of operations, and readiness of operations for new or restarted activities. In this role they will work directly with organizations executing work in the Laboratory s Plutonium Facility to evaluate compliance and coach operators performing hands on work with nuclear material. A mentor must be able to anticipate challenges or obstacles and tactfully resolve them with minimal supervision. This position works collaboratively with a broad range of staff from different organizations, as well as staff and contractors assigned to the organization. The Mentor will make recommendations on process improvements while providing on-going technical conduct of operations/readiness support and may be asked to lead specific initiatives.

As directed by the ORI Division Leader, the Conduct of Operations Mentors may:

  • Serve as senior supervisory watch (SSW) in the safety oversight of nuclear operations and activities as assigned.

  • Provide conduct of operations mentoring and coaching to workers and supervisors.

  • Advise operations on management expectations and compliance with P315 Conduct of Operations Manual.

  • Provide leadership and assist in the tactical planning for performance improvement initiatives.

  • Applies knowledge and experience to develop instructions, procedures, standing orders, and reports.

  • Must be able to demonstrate good judgment in interpreting requirements and excellent communications skills in order to communicate requirements to all levels of operations staff.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in Conduct of Operations.

Requirements

  • Twenty (20 years) of directly applicable experience in specialized technical field and is acknowledged as an expert in the specific area in question.
  • Significant demonstrated experience in nuclear operations in a Haz Cat 2 facility, that preferably includes the processing of nuclear materials that results in changes in material forms.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in nuclear facility operations requirements, including safety, safeguards and security, radiation protection, waste management, criticality safety, conduct of operations, and the integration of these requirements into a functional operational strategy.
  • Extensive experience in an advisory role (e.g., subject matter expert, senior supervisory watch, conduct of operations mentor, etc.), interacting effectively with all levels of external and internal personnel; building trust; gaining consensus; and resolving conflicts.
  • Demonstrated history maintaining effective relationships with both internal and external oversight organizations.
  • Advanced knowledge in technical or operational disciplines of the TA‐55 programmatic operations.

Education

  • Masters degree in Engineering, Science or Business Management. PhD degree preferred at this level.
