    Job Summary

The Air Particle Sampling Technician performs air particle measurements under the general supervision of the Director of Design and Construction Management and Infection Control.

    Typical duties include:

  • Assembling air sampling equipment

  • Proper maintenance and calibration of air sampling equipment

  • Accurate collection of air particle samples

  • Sending samples and alerting laboratories for special timely result requirements

  • Receiving and reporting results to Infection Control clinician

  • Ordering supplies and demonstration

  • Coordination of repair and maintenance of air sample equipment

  • Air sample equipment includes three types of machines. One captures air samples for culture on agar plates, and the other captures air particulates onto an adhesive in a cassette, referred to as a non-viable spore trap (two different methodologies for result captures). The third sampling equipment is an air particulate counter. Air samples are taken after construction to establish a safe environment exists after construction activities to the environment outside the construction area before exposing the newly constructed space.

Routine air samples are used to provide environmental baseline data to be used as reference when infections arise throughout the hospital and to determine and if an environmental source is related and eliminate it.

The Construction Project Manager works with Infection Control Clinicians to develop a containment plan on construction projects that provide protection to the surrounding areas and mitigates any risk of harm as a result of construction activities. A Construction Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) is developed to define the measures to mitigate the risks of such harm. Construction containments are reviewed daily by the air sample tech to maintain the integrity of the Infection Control Risk Assessment Mitigation plan. The tech will walk every construction containment daily and document their observations in the data base on the IPad. Any deficits to the ICRA will be immediately reported to the Construction Manager for the project.

At the end of the construction project or phase, the environmental services must be notified of the cleaning schedule, level of clean, and schedule the air sample, and the removal of construction containment measures following the ICRA. This schedule is referred to as PCCAS. This document is updated and distributed to the affected EVS, general contractor, facilities personnel, department personnel, construction management, and infection control. New schedules are produced by the air sample tech as new cleans are identified and scheduled.

Samples collected for laboratory process will be accessioned by the air sample tech, will be properly labelled and queued for the courier to deliver to the laboratory. Timely results will be received and the Infection Control clinician will be notified for interpretation of the results.

Construction Hotline Messages are recorded and cleared daily. The log is used to establish trends and track changes that occur from work stoppages as it relates to disruption of hospital operations.
