Summary of Responsibilities
The STEM Speech Coordinator will teach COMM 111 Public Speaking and other classes,
as needed; develop new courses in public speaking designed for different majors, including
engineering and STEM; and serve as the Coordinator for STEM communication classes.
Coordinator duties include developing and maintaining a common syllabus for introductory
courses in public speaking designed for engineering and STEM majors, training and overseeing
GTAs and adjunct instructors who teach those courses, promoting student retention by
designing intervention strategies for at-risk students in these courses, and serving as a liaison
between the School of Communication and other departments and colleges on campus,
including the School of Engineering.

Minimum Education
Master’s degree in communication or related field
Minimum Experience
Two years of experience teaching public speaking at the college level

Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Knowledge or familiarity with engineering and/or STEM communication
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to be an effective teacher at the undergraduate level.
