The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a Part-time Social Worker MSW to support and report to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Principal Investigator of the WE CARE grant, and the Associate and Assistant Deans for Academic Affairs. This position serves as a Social Worker (Clinical Care Coordinator) for students enrolled in the UAB School of Nursing (SON). The individual in this position will provide mental and behavioral health care coordination to students, following them through care transitions and managing resources related to behavioral health. The individual will work closely with faculty and leadership and develop relationships with community resources to facilitate student referrals for more intensive behavioral health care. Provides care, case management, and interventions designed to promote health, prevent disease, and address barriers to accessing healthcare. To serve as a clinical resource to students and the UABSON community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conducts social service needs assessments to determine student needs, barriers to management of needs, and recovery.

2. Documents assessment findings in the clinical record according to established standards.

3. Implements a plan to address identified needs in collaboration with students and student affairs, utilizing referrals as appropriate.

4. Implements appropriate social service interventions to address student needs. Maintains a working knowledge of available resources internal and external to UAB. Provides and documents relevant student education according to policy. Refer students to appropriate school/community resources as needed.

5. Participates in quality improvement initiatives and educational/research activities.

6. Acts in a caring and courteous manner toward all students and visitors in the following ways: uses positive interpersonal skills to alleviate concerns and frustrations of students, other staff, and faculty; provides assistance in a timely manner; references appropriate procedures in a calm and courteous way; acts always in a professional and confidential manner with respect to all information and records.

7. Ethical conduct is a fundamental expectation for every UAB community member. All employees must abide by the standards of behavior outlined in the UAB Enterprise Code of Conduct. Upon hire, new employees must attest to the Code by completing the online training assigned to them. Behavior inconsistent with the Code may result in appropriate consequences.

8. Performs other related duties as directed to support the missions of the UAB School of Nursing.

Qualifications

Master's degree in Social Work required two (2) years of experience with behavioral health care is preferred. Prior case management/care coordination experience is preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently licensed as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.

Must be computer literate, experience with MS Office Suite desired. This position requires that the individual have good time management skills, be conscientious, self-directed, and efficient in accomplishing the stated tasks and responsibilities. Additionally, this individual must be capable of working with a diverse population of students and should have appropriate interpersonal and writing skills to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and other parties internal or external to UAB. To succeed in this position, an individual should be a collaborative team member and possess strong organizational and communication skills. All work performed must be in accordance with SON and UAB policies and procedures and the UAB Enterprise Code of Conduct.
