The City of Salem is hiring a Signs and Markings Worker to be a part of the Public Works Sign and Sweeping team!

What you will do:
Manual work in maintenance, repair and construction work. As a member of a crew or individually, the work will involve installation and maintenance of street signs & posts; lane line striping; curb painting; pavement markings & legends; cleaning up transient camps & illegal dump sites; right-of-way mowing; setting up traffic control for work zones, planned special events and emergency road closures. As a Signs and Markings Worker you will use tools such as post hole diggers, digging bar, propane torch, hand & power tools and other related tools as required. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions and involves working in the right of way of high urban traffic areas.

  • Position schedule is Monday thru Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, physical exam, and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must have a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain it within six months from date of hire and have a driving record that meets the City of Salem’s driving standards.
  • Two years’ experience in maintenance, repair, and construction of right-of-way improvements in traffic control signs and markings.
What you will bring along:
  • Experience in construction and maintenance work with sign and post installation; durable pavement markings and setting up traffic control; operating a variety of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of tools, materials & equipment involved in the maintenance and installation of traffic control devices.
  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (M.U.T.C.D.) and State Revisions; traffic laws, occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in maintenance work in the public rights of way.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; access a computerized inventory system on a daily basis; read maps; interpret plans and specifications and keep records of time and materials used.
