DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for the performance of specialized manual work in variety of tasks related to the cleaning and maintenance of sewer lines and mains. Under the supervision of a higher level

worker or a crew leader, an employee in this class performs semiskilled manual work requiring the use of a variety of sewer equipment and tools to clean and maintain sewer lines and mains. This is physically

demanding work requiring knowledge of safety measures and physical strength and agility to work under

adverse weather conditions. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Cleans sewer main lines; repairs sewer breaks, cave-ins, and street holes to mains and performs a

variety of tasks associated with sewer maintenance activities.

May operate motor equipment in the transport of workers, materials and equipment to, from and

on work sites.

Inspects conditions of sewer lines and mains.

Replaces access hole covers that are damaged.

Assists in operating sewer-rod equipment and busket machines.

Operates jackhammers and other equipment used in sewer maintenance work.

When assigned to the City of Syracuse DPW, may operate a dump truck in connection with the

removal of snow and ice.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods currently used in cleaning and maintenance

of sewer mains and lines.

Some knowledge of the hazards and necessary projections in sewer maintenance work and in working under extreme weather conditions.

Skill in the use of a variety of tools.

Ability and willingness to do heavy manual work.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

There are no minimum qualifications for this class.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class

of vehicle(s) being operated.
