Job Description Summary

The Research Specialist II will partner will Principal Investigator and Research Program Manager in the conduct of large and complex clinical research studies in areas of importance to global health, including infectious diseases and non-communicable disease. The conduct of the clinical research trial involves the investigation of new diagnostics and therapeutics for tuberculosis. This position will involve international travel, mainly but not limited to Africa. The duration and frequency of international travel is estimated at one 7 to 14 day trip approximately 1-2 x per year, on average. This position requires independent decision-making and a high degree of professionalism.

Job Description

Job Duties:

35% - Leads a section of the TB diagnostics program. Guides, manages, and organizes the day-to-day activities of approximately 12 people overseas. Ensures overseas team conducts study work to prespecified quality standards and timelines.

25% - Manage study data and perform basic statistical analyses of study data; draft and revise scientific manuscripts describing study results. Develops procedures manuals and case report forms used during study implementation.

10% - Coordinate communication with MUSC and non-MUSC investigators and study teams, including by email, and phone/Zoom. Develop meeting agendas, chair project meetings, follow-up on action items.

10% - Oversees study-specific training for international site teams. This may include on-site trainings at international study site(s) and/or remote (e.g. web-based) training. Assesses training needs, creates training plans and materials used for training, implements training, and monitors outcome of trainings.

10% - Responsible for monitoring study quality and progress. This will require regular telephone/Zoom communications with international study teams and may require periodic international travel to conduct site initiation, interim, and close-out monitoring visits. Writes close-out reports and develops and implements remediation plans when indicated based on monitoring findings.

5% - Manages the preparation of protocols and study documents for submission to the necessary regulatory offices; coordinate communications with study sponsors and regulatory agencies.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
