Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduation or the equivalent, with some science courses and two years of experience in relevant field, or Associate degree in Life Sciences.
  • Ability to work in a team setting in the laboratory and on week-long field trips.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork for up to 10 days at a time.
  • Valid US driver’s license, clean driving record, ability to pass University driving background check.
  • Physical ability to work long hours outdoors in all weather conditions and long hours at the microscope in the laboratory.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or Ecology.
  • Experience sampling fish and aquatic invertebrates from streams and wetlands.
  • Experience and ability to identify Great Lakes fish species.
  • Experience piloting and trailering small boats.
  • Experience sorting aquatic invertebrates from sample debris and identifying them to order or family.
  • Experience working on research vessels (ships).
  • Experience with long field trips and difficult working conditions.
  • First aid/CPR/AED training.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs (especially Word and Excel).
  • Experience doing data entry into on-line databases or Excel spreadsheets and quality- checking those entries for accuracy.
  • Experience developing and writing Standard Operating Procedures, data sheets and data entry forms.

A field and laboratory technician are needed to work on various aquatic environmental projects, maintaining strict quality assurance protocols. Duties include aquatic field work, sample processing in the laboratory, and computer work. Technician will be part of a team performing field sampling of fish and aquatic invertebrates in wetlands and streams in the summer. Field surveys consist of data/sample collection of water, sediment, fish, macroinvertebrates, and habitat observations.

During the winter season, technician performs microscope processing of samples separating invertebrates from debris and performing family level identifications. Technician also enters data into a database or Excel spreadsheet and checks data for quality assurance. Position is 100% time.

Job Duties:
  • Perform fish and invertebrate sampling in streams and wetlands as part of a team (35%).
  • Sort aquatic invertebrates from sample debris using a microscope; identify invertebrates to family level (45%).
  • Enter data into a database or Excel spreadsheet and check data for accuracy (20%).

The salary range for this position is: $41,600-$48,796.

This is a 100%-time, permanent Bargaining Unit position.
