Senior Director, Technology Office of the CIO

The Senior Director Technology, the Office of the CIO is accountable for the set up and running of an efficient technology portfolio management team, ensuring the right level of assurance and visibility for the senior & executive team plus the delivery of the necessary digital tools. The management and reporting of technology capex and revex and the proactive management of 3rd party tech suppliers. Responsible for delivering an Asda Talent & Resourcing Strategy and approach to Change and Comms for the Technology team. Senior Technology Lead, responsible for the design and delivery of the new Asda Tech Operating Model.


Your Role

  • Design, implement and run a new Tech Portfolio Management Team, ensuring the necessary governance, assurance, policies and procedures covering all technology delivery.
  • Create and manage the technology roadmap, ensuring plans align with the business and delivery excellence / standards are met.
  • Deliver high standards of reporting, using industry standard digital tools, allowing real time visibility and timely decision making.
  • Manage all Change & Communications for Technology, internally and externally.
  • Manage funding and budget planning, monitoring and reporting for all technology capex and revex.
  • Supplier service management, performance and cost optimisation; liaison with Procurement to ensure proactive contract management.
  • Create and mange a Talent Strategy for Tech, including Skills & Competency Management, Colleague Pathways and Talent Identification, Resource Management, Pay & Grading, Learning & Development.
  • Implement the new Technology Operating Model, to ensure the successful separation from Walmart, creating a modern forward thinking Tech Team and a great place to work.

About You


Knowledge & Experience

  • Significant experience of implementing, leading and developing a large multi-functional department within a business delivering a huge amount of change.
  • Commercial awareness and experience of managing large (£100+m) budgets and supplier contracts, ensuring the necessary reporting and visibility.
  • Comprehensive understanding and knowledge of delivering significant change, ensuring informed decision making can take place.
  • Practical experience and understanding of transformational leadership, delivering to high standards, with the ability to demonstrate continuous service improvement.

Communicating and Influencing

  • This is a significant leadership role, requiring you to build and maintain an extensive network of peers and superiors (including board level) across the Asda business. You will be responsible for delivering the necessary reporting to ensure decisions can be made with the necessary information and data.
  • Ability to influence at the highest levels across the business and with third party suppliers, to get the right outcome for Asda and deliver the new Technology Operating Model.

Freedom to Think and Act.

  • This role requires a high degree of autonomous thinking as you set and deliver your strategy using your experience, guided by broad principles and direction from the Exec board. You have the freedom to define your own plan using own judgement to achieve success.
  • Relationship management is critical, building effective relationships with technology and business colleagues and 3rd party suppliers is fundamental to achieve in this role.
