Job description

Under direction, inspects and oversees construction inspection activities to ensure compliance with project plans, approved shop/working drawings, project documents and specifications reporting observations orally and in writing to direct report. Work requires application of engineering principles.

Employee shall have the following minimum duties and responsibilities:

  • Inspect construction activities in accordance with established quality procedures and evaluate compliance with project plans, specifications, shop drawings and other project related documents.
  • Prepare and submit accurate, legible, comprehensive and complete testing and/or inspection reports on a daily basis in accordance with established quality procedures.
  • Review plans, specifications, general notes and shop/working drawings for assigned activities prior to performing assigned duties.
  • Perform, supervise, report on frequency compliance and coordinate field tests on materials and completed work using standard methods established by AASHTO, ASTM or other agency with appropriate, properly calibrated testing equipment.
  • Perform mathematical calculations using basic algebra (fundamental laws, algebraic expressions), geometry, and the trigonometric functions of right triangles.
  • Train less experience workers on work methods.
  • Serve as lead worker for less experienced workers.
  • Assist Direct Report in planning and coordinating inspection operations.
  • Meet with contractor's supervisors or other project leaders on assigned project sites to discuss and coordinate testing, sampling, or inspection of construction materials or construction procedures.
  • Assign work priority tasks to assigned inspector(s).
  • Review material tests and completed work performed by assigned inspectors to ensure compliance with requirements of established procedures.
  • Verify adequacy of number of samples and locations at which samples are collected to ensure representative distribution of sampling and testing.
  • Provide input in evaluations of employee performance.
  • Understand, adhere and participate in the Raba Kistner Health and Safety and Behavior Based Safety Programs and set a good safety example.
  • The safe utilization, storage and maintenance of all documents and tools.
  • Contact assigned direct report for priorities and deadlines for assigned tasks.
  • Update of Direct Report on progress and delays on every task or assignment.
  • Safe usage and maintenance of individually assigned company vehicle and field equipment including use within company policy.
  • Carry out assigned duties in accordance with established procedures
  • Meet directed priorities and deadlines.
  • Maintenance of certifications at the time of employment or obtained during employment.
  • Collection, preparation and transmittal of samples to laboratories.
  • Frequently lift and/or move 60 pounds and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction or roadway sites; potential exposure to hazardous dangerous chemicals and solvents, noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration; all of which would require employee to follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate protective equipment.
  • Position may require protracted or irregular hours. Flexibility to work irregular hours is necessary due to client needs. Work responsibilities require out of town travel to Raba Kistner offices, client offices and project locations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Employees shall possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or GED certification. A person in this position generally, but not necessarily has a minimum of 25 years experience in roadway, and related facilities, construction inspection or NICET Level IV certification in Transportation Engineering Technology (Highway Construction). Related experience and/or education may be evaluated to substitute for on the job experience.
  • Shall possess a valid drivers license within the applicable jurisdiction and meet firms auto insurability requirements.
  • The following certifications and training are preferred:
    • Completion of Troxler Manufacturing or equal radiation safety course to utilize nuclear gauges.
    • Completion of State specific Technician Training and Certification Program (TTCP) for applicable testing/sampling procedures, or ability to complete within 6 months of employment.
    • ACI Field Testing Technician Level 1.
  • Successful applicants without the above certifications or training may be required to pursue successful attainment of the certifications. Related experience may be substituted with the approval of the client.

Extensive knowledge of

  • Highway construction plans, construction inspection procedures, and specifications.
  • Materials used in highway construction.
  • Material testing procedures.

Thorough knowledge of

  • Construction project document auditing techniques.

Considerable knowledge of

  • Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • The State specific Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices or National Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices approved by the Federal Highway Administrator as the National Standard.

Working knowledge of

  • Personal computers and the use of applicable software.

Ability to

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing to communicate problems, status of work, daily reports, etc.
  • Work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Read and understand plans, specifications, instructions, labels, reports, etc.
  • Travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain.
  • Prepare and maintain records, files, and reports.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel.
  • Use hand tools such as sledgehammers, shovels and picks
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Analyze, problem solve, and recommend solutions.
  • Plan and coordinate work activities, oversee programs, interpret engineering plans, and instruct.
  • Ability to drive company vehicle, manage and complete all assigned jobs, efficiently and on time.

Required to

  • Wear personal protective equipment.
  • Present a professional appearance to best represent the firm.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to post-accident, random, and reasonable cause testing during employment.
  • Comply with all attendance requirements as noted in most current edition of the Employee Handbook.

Skill in

  • Proficiently performing tests on materials in the field to determine acceptability.
