JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Converts specifications (precise descriptions) about business or scientific problems into a sequence of detailed instructions to solve problems by electronic data processing (EDP) equipment, i.e., digital computers.
  • Draws program flow charts to describe the processing of data and develops the precise steps and processing logic which, when entered into the computer in the coded language (COBOL, FORTRAN, or another programming language), causes the manipulation of data to achieve desired results.
  • Tests and corrects programs and prepares instructions for operators who control the computer during runs.
  • Modifies programs to increase operating efficiency or to respond to changes in work processes; maintains records to document program development and revisions.
  • At this level, initial assignments are designed to develop competence in applying established programming procedures to routine problems.
  • Performs routine programming assignments that do not require skilled background experience but do require knowledge of established programming procedures and data processing requirements.
  • Works according to clear-cut and complete specifications.
  • The data are refined and the format of the final product is very similar to that of the input or is well defined when significantly different, i.e., there are few if any, problems with interrelating varied records and outputs.
  • Maintains and modifies routine programs.
  • Makes approved changes by amending program flow charts, developing detailed processing logic, and coding changes.
  • Tests and documents modifications and writes operator instructions.
  • May write routine new programs using prescribed specifications; may confer with EDP personnel to clarify procedures, processing logic, etc.
  • In addition, and as continued training, may evaluate simple interrelationships in the immediate programming area, e.g., whether a contemplated change in one part of a simple program would cause unwanted results in a related part; confers with user representatives to gain an understanding of the situation sufficient to formulate the needed change; and implements the change upon approval of the supervisor or higher level staff.
  • The incumbent is provided with charts, narrative descriptions of the functions performed, an approved statement of the product desired (e.g., a change in a local establishment report), and the inputs, outputs, and record formats.
  • Reviews objectives and assignment details with higher level staff to insure thorough understanding; uses judgment in selecting among authorized procedures and seeks assistance when guidelines are inadequate, significant deviations are proposed, or when unanticipated problems arise.
  • Work is usually monitored in progress; all work is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Comply with all current sections of the f COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series applicable to aircraft maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of technical publications, NA, MP, and NALCOMIS aircraft maintenance applications.
OTHER or ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform the job-related duties as may be assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of electronic data processing (EDP) equipment, i.e., digital computers, mainframe, and minicomputers.
  • Knowledge of COBOL, FORTRAN, or other programming language.
  • Ability to interact effectively with personnel at all organizational levels.
  • Understand technical language terms in the associated field.
  • Possess a valid US State driver's license.
  • Ability to read and interpret data is required.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to obtain a secret security clearance.

Experience & Education

  • High School degree or equivalent required.
  • Degree in Computer Programming is desired.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of actual al and recent experience in computers and programming.
  • Degree in Computer Programming can be substituted for experience.
  • Personnel with this classification must be specialized in the following SCA

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Ability to work under pressure and continuously meet deadlines.
  • Works in a normal office in a hanger environment.
