Job Description

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Claims Adjusters are responsible for the investigation, evaluation and settlement (either by denial, compromise or payment) of claims arising from physical damages to vehicles, property of customer and third parties (property damage claims and non-represented medium to large bodily injury claims and all personal injury protection). Adjusters perform a variety of duties which require in-depth knowledge of risks under management, product offered and insurance investigation techniques within the claims office. Must maintain integrity of proprietary information. **This position is in-office at our Mid Town U-Haul campus in Phoenix, AZ and is not eligible for remote work.

Essential Duties: (Note: Essential duties are not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary).

  • Receive correspondence or phone call alleging some type of loss or claim from insured and/or claimant. Review existing pertinent correspondence or talk to party on the phone. Send letters and necessary forms to the insured and/or claimant requesting pertinent facts or information. Determine if an independent adjuster is required and make proper arrangements by contacting local adjusting bureau in that area by letter or telephone.
  • Gather facts pertinent to the liability of the claim by written correspondence, telephone and services of an independent adjuster, if necessary.
  • Evaluate data supplied by police reports, repair statements, contracts, witness statements, claims settlements, etc. to determine if liability exists.
  • Prepare formal denial letters by dictation or verbally by telephone, with prior supervisor approval, if there is no coverage or liability.
  • Evaluate the amount of the claim according to the facts of the accident and investigation if there is liability or coverage.
  • Settle at a fair price, after investigation, claims within the adjuster’s authority limits without sacrificing quality of work to meet established standards of quantity.
  • Must become licensed in all states handled, within six months of employment, which require an adjuster’s license.
  • Utilize the adjuster’s experience, knowledge and judgment to provide the insured and/or claimant with the best possible service, thereby avoiding complaints.
  • Maintain a number of pending claims within acceptable limits and control expenses through proper work organization.
  • Refer questions on claims exceeding individual authorization to the Supervisor.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and new practices and methods by formal schooling and reviewing technical
  • publications.
  • Take recorded statements as required.
  • Must read and follow fair claims practices of states for which they are accountable.
  • Must meet or exceed company and department performance goals.

Education and Training:

High School Diploma or equivalent experience
