The Security Officer is responsible for general security in the buildings and surrounding areas of the Retirement Community according to the established standards to ensure a safe environment for our residents, staff, visitors, physicians and volunteers. Works collaboratively with leadership and other staff members to support the Mission and Values of SCBMA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrols halls and grounds of the community on a regular basis throughout shift, according to standard procedure.
    • Check parked cars to assure valid authorization is present and visible. Determines if vehicles are parked in restricted areas, such as near fire hydrants, in driveways, ambulance entrance, or reserved parking.
    • Check exit doors for compliance with locking procedures
    • Reports or stops theft of any SCBMA property, supplies or that of any resident
    • Provide high visibility and presence to assure residents of caution and care
  • Reports any unusual conditions or malfunctioning of lights, heating/air conditioning, plumbing, or electrical systems.
  • Reports any unusual activity that may jeopardize the safety and security of the residents/staff or which could damage the physical structures. Documents any incidents during tour of duty and completes incident reports, as needed
  • Escorts personnel to and from parking lots or between buildings, as necessary
  • Assists charge nurse in locating residents that may wander onto the grounds and help return them safely
  • Locks/unlocks doors according to procedure
  • Observes weather conditions and notifies charge nurse and/or Maintenance Director of precautions
  • Responds to emergency pager according to procedure
    • Assists nurse on duty, if needed and follows procedure for emergency including directing EMS if needed
  • Directs and assists personnel, as needed
  • Delivers prescription and other deliveries after hours if needed
  • Assists in checking residences if unusual situations warrant and follow procedures as directed
  • Responsible for knowing the fire/disaster plans and assists in carrying out these plans when necessary under direction of the charge nurse.
  • Traps and neutralize wildlife, as necessary
  • Recognizes and reports concerns regarding residents’ physical, mental and/or emotional status to a member of Management staff.
  • Is a good steward of SCBMA equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulations from DHEC, Fire and Safety, OSHA, Labor Laws, etc. and adhere to HIPAA confidentiality standards and Resident’s Rights.
  • This position is an essential role and the incumbent will be required to work during emergency situations including natural disasters
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High School or equivalent.
  • One to three months experience in the security and/or emergency response fields preferred
  • CPR, AED and first aid training are required (certifications can either be completed prior to employment or within the 3-month introductory period)
  • Valid SC driver’s license and 3-year clean driving record
  • Understanding of physical and psychological effects of the aging process
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations that pertain to the security of a long-term care facility.
  • Ability to maintain patient, tactful composure when dealing with residents, family members, staff and visitors
  • Committed to 100% security of residents, staff and facilities

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Exposure to inside/outside conditions
  • Exposure to biological agents such as viruses and other microbes
  • Occasional work during off hours including weekends, nights or holidays
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time
  • Strength, mobility and stamina to perform physical tasks as needed
