SECURITY OFFICER- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Position Title: Security Officer

Employment Classification: Non-Exempt

Fundamental Objective: Perform all services required to observe and report all shift activity to protect the assets of clients

Level of Supervision Required: Limited supervision is required. The Security Officer will operate with full knowledge of Company and Client policies and procedures and will exhibit a high level of independence and motivation.

Job functions will generally vary from post to post. Each post will require a security officer to perform some or all of the following essential duties, responsibilities, functions, and may require some of the following physical requirements.

I. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

A. Maintain foot patrol in accordance with instructions.

1. Walk the perimeter of client premises using prescribed schedules.

2. Record rounds on in Daily Activity Reports.

B. Observe all activity occurring during each scheduled shift.

1. Listen for all unusual sounds.

2. Identify any unusual odors.

C. Open and close gates and/or doors, and lock them, as required.

D. Respond to all problem situations encountered, as appropriate.

1. Report any suspicious activities to client’s staff, your supervisor, or emergency personnel.

2. Perform safety check-in procedures.

3. Use safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, as required.

E. Communicate with supervisors, clients, and any responsible person on-site, as required.

F. Prepare written Daily Activity Reports and Incident Reports.

G. Maintain communication with the public, contractors, vendors and clients to assure satisfaction with ASF’s services.

II. Potential Job Duties and Responsibilities

A. Drive golf cart, utility vehicle or ride a bicycle, if applicable, to conduct perimeter inspections.

B. Raise and lower flags.

C. Change tires on company vehicles, as necessary.

III. Minimum Qualifications

A. Educational requirements: High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (or equivalent). (A security school certificate and/or one year of previous security experience may be substituted for this requirement).

B. Ability to observe and report.

C. A valid California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services registration card.

D. Reading, writing and verbal language ability necessary to perform the essential functions of the job as listed in Section III.

E. Ability to walk for extended periods including walking over rough terrain or uneven ground, walking up stairs and walking long distances. Hourly perimeter walks may be up to one mile.

F. Ability to stand to perform inspection duties.

G. Ability to lift 15 lbs. on a regular basis.

H. Ability to ride a bicycle for the duration of perimeter check.

I. Ability to drive a golf cart or utility vehicle and ride a bicycle for the duration of perimeter check.

J. Possess a valid Class “C” California driver’s license and driving record acceptable to ASF’s insurance underwriter.

IV. Essential Position Requirements

A. Use the telephone to communicate clearances for authorization, give directions/instructions to perform safety check-ins, and to maintain personal contact with customers, public, contractors and vendors.

B. Use a hand-held radio to obtain clearances for authorizations, safety check-ins, give directions/instructions and maintain contact with Trans-west office, customers, public, contractors and vendors.

C. Use a flashlight to light dark areas.

D. Use keys to unlock/lock doors and/or equipment.

E. Use an automobile for patrol of customer accounts.

F. Use clipboards to hold papers and provide writing surface.

G. Use pens and pencils to write reports.

V. Potential Position Requirements

A. Use a golf cart or utility vehicle to patrol customer property.

B. Use a bicycle to patrol customer property.

C. Use automotive tools necessary to change tires on company vehicles.

D. Operate a fire extinguisher when necessary during an emergency.

VI. Essential Physical Requirements

A. Body Position and Movement

1. Stand to perform foot patrolling, log ingress/egress, observe shift activity.

2. Walk to observe all activity on client premises.

3. Twist upper body while observing and reporting client activities.

4. Sit to observe shift activity, write reports, log ingress/egress, use telephone, and write reports.

5. Kneel to pick up objects/materials for disposition.

6. Crouch/stoop to perform inspections.

B. Object Manipulation

1. Open/close gates as required (heavy, awkward). This requires use of both hands to control weights up to 50 lbs. and to lift upward, lift outward, push, and pull.

2. Use hand-held radio for communication (approximately 1 lb) – grasp with one hand.

3. Use a telephone to communicate hourly with dispatcher (less than 1 lb) – grasp with hand, push buttons with finger(s).

4. Use keys to unlock/lock doors (less than 1 lb) – grasp with thumb/forefinger, push, turn.

5. Use flashlight to light dark areas (less than 1 lb) – grasp with hand, push on-off button with thumb.

6. Use pens/pencils for written communications – grasp, push

C. Simultaneous Object Manipulations

1. Talk on telephone while taking messages.

2. Write reports while observing activity on client premises.

3. Drive a vehicle while observing activities on client premises.

4. Walk while observing activities on client premises.

VII. Environmental Demands

A. Exposure to extreme heat, up to 100 degrees for up to 8 hours, to perform regular guard duties during summer months. (Company requires that employees wear appropriate light clothing and drink water/liquids to prevent dehydration. Guards must use radio monitoring in an emergency.

B. Work outdoors to perform regular guard duties.

C. Work indoors to perform guard duties as previously described.

D. Exposure to extreme cold during winter temperature swings only.

E. Work around chemical hazards in an emergency where applicable. The company requires guards to report to supervisors any chemical hazard occurrence and to receive instructions regarding leaving the area.

F. Work around fumes/odors to perform regular guard duties as previously described. Risk involved may include headaches, nausea, eye irritation or respiratory irritation. The company requires guard to report any symptoms due to exposure and receive instructions regarding leaving the area.
