Job Summary


  • There are multiple positions which will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities. Positions can be stationed at the discretion and need of the business group at any of the following locations: Surry Power Station, North Anna Power Station, Richmond, South Boston, Petersburg, and Brunswick, Petersburg, Midlothian, Lincoln Park, Fredericksburg, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Roanoke Rapids (NC).

Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission System Protection Department is seeking motivated, engaged individuals to fill several vacancies within the organization. Electric Transmission is the organization responsible for the long-term planning, engineering, construction, and operations of the high voltage electric grid system operated from 69kV to 500kV. This is an exciting time to join our team as we are involved in industry-leading projects and initiatives such as interconnecting 5000 MW of solar generation in the next 5 years, the first utility-owned offshore wind project in United States federal waters off the Atlantic coast, virtual digital protection conversions, and the largest data center load growth in the world all as part of our plan to achieve net zero carbon emission goal by 2050.


This role performs maintenance, installation and corrective activities on system protection devices, control circuits, metering, and communication equipment (both data and PLC) within Dominion's Transmission, Distribution and Generating network. All maintenance, installation and corrective activities performed under direct supervision from Tech/Senior/Lead technician.


  • This position ensures that appropriate compliance maintenance activities, applications, policies, and associated documentation are managed and maintained in support of ETFO's Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and Protective Relay and Control (PRC) programs
  • Maintenance activities include instruction/guidance in routine cleaning, calibration and functional operational testing of all primary electro-mechanical and microprocessor protection applications
  • Assists during routine testing and functional verification of all communications equipment including data, fiber optic, and power line carrier
  • Assists during functional operational testing of substation auxiliary equipment and verification of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data systems that provide the operating centers with real time operating and alarm information
  • Assists with protective relay and control equipment repairs
  • Installation activities include assisting Lead/Senior technicians' functional verification of all primary and secondary equipment as designed by Dominion and its manufacturers
  • Corrective activities include assisting Lead/Senior technicians in analyzing alarms, identifying potential problems, and developing safe and effective basic corrective action investigation plans
  • Activities regarding potential cyber issues related to protection and control devices require that security assessments be performed to verify the integrity of cyber security control at substation locations
  • Successful candidate must be able to report to service territory within 1 hour
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned
  • Nuclear Background clearance may be needed for some sites

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience


System Protection T1: 0 to 1 year of directly related experience with a preferred Associate degree
System Protection T2: 1-2 years of directly related experience with a preferred Associate degree
System Protection T3: 2+ years directly related experience with a preferred Associate degree


  • Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications

  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of control circuits, protective relay applications and substation equipment
  • Knowledge of testing electro-mechanical based relays
  • Knowledge of microprocessor-based relay technology, including logic diagrams, variable equations, and communication interfaces
  • Skills: good verbal and written communication; computer knowledge; leadership and training
  • Abilities: test moderately complex protective relays, remote terminal units, power line carrier and metering applications; direct/advise technicians in major control installations; work under tight deadlines and pressure situations; carry heavy test equipment; work independently; plan and organize moderately complex substation construction projects\
  • Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds.



Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3 plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above / below).

Associate Degree preferred or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education


  • This role will consider upcoming graduates who graduate no later than August 31st, 2023
