Cape Cod (Hyannis & Truro) & Martha’s Vineyard Summer Hostels
HI USA has a long history of operating summer hostels in the Cape Cod area. These hostels provide great guest engagement opportunities and are a mixture of in-town and rural locations.
We are currently accepting applications for Seasonal Hostel Assistants. The hostel assistant provides general assistance around the hostel by covering the front desk, performing housekeeping duties, and assisting with the maintenance of the facility and grounds. The Hostel Manager and Hostel Assistant(s) for each location live on property with shared facilities.

Hourly rate is $15.00, includes on-site housing. *Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays throughout the season. Applicants must be available a FULL SEASON, from either May 1st - September 30th or July 29th - September 6th to be considered.
Training will be provided but applicants must bring a passion for working with the public, serving guests and an appreciation for travel and the HI USA mission. Knowledge of the Cape and surrounding areas a plus.
Responsibilities:

  • Welcome, register, and orient guests to the property. Provide group orientations in a friendly and positive manner, while being mindful of cultural differences and possible language barriers
  • Take individual and group reservations by telephone, e-mail, or via an online system, in a friendly, accurate and efficient manner.
  • Respond to and resolve guest inquiries, issues, or concerns.
  • Encourage and collect guest comments and feedback.
  • Follow hostel procedures, ensuring the security and safety of the hostel, hostel property, guests, guests’ property, and fellow employees.
  • Promote the mission of HI USA: “To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people, through hostelling”.
  • Represent HI USA and the hostel in a positive manner to guests, callers, and local officials.
  • Promote and provide information on HI memberships, the hostel, and the local area to guests and visitors in person, over the telephone, and via e-mail.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special events and gatherings.
  • Performance housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and grounds keeping duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Hostel Manager.

Skills/Qualifications:*

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience handling cash and recording sales transactions preferred.
  • Lifting and stretching required for bed making, furniture movement, storage of deliveries, yard work, and basic maintenance.
  • Must enjoy working with the public and have the ability to calmly and professionally handle conflict, guest issues, or emergencies.
  • Excellent oral communication and organizational skills.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as schedule requires.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred; training and certification may be provided
  • Hostelling experience a plus.
  • Ability to speak a second language a plus.
