HJF is seeking a Scientist I to support the Translational Therapeutics Core at the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. This position is responsible for developing and carrying out research projects, under the direction of Dr. Regina Armstrong, Chair of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Genetics within the School of Medicine. Develops and conducts research projects conduct in experimental models to screen therapies for sleep disorders and other persistent symptoms associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related clinical conditions under the direction of Dr. Regina Armstrong. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.
This position will be in support of the Translational Therapeutics Core at the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The research team values a collaborative environment and multi-disciplinary research. We are testing the potential repurposing of therapeutics to TBI as a new indication. Strong applicants will be able to bring expertise in electrophysiology and sleep behavior to complement our ongoing behavioral, neuropathological, biomarker, and neuroimaging studies on therapeutics to mitigate late-stage effects of stress and repetitive TBI.
Responsibilities:
- Formulates experimental hypotheses, designs, and executes experimental protocols.
- Makes scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. Analyzes and interprets experimental data, including statistical analyses.
- Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
- Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
- Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
- Performs highly skilled and specialized laboratory research techniques, such as sleep behavior studies using electrophysiological (EEG/EMG) studies and stereotaxic surgery.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
- Ability to work independently and supervise others.
- Experience with sleep studies or electrophysiology (EEG/EMG or other forms) is required.
- This position requires interaction with rodents on a regular basis to conduct research.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
Qualifications:

- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Education and Experience:
- Doctorate or equivalent degree is required for this position.
- Preferred field of study is Neuroscience or related disciplines.
- Minimum of 2-5 years is required for this required.
