PURPOSE STATEMENT

To maintain the safety and security of ECPS school buildings and all ECPS students, faculty and support staff.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The list of duties and responsibilities performed by this position are as follows:


  • The primary focus of the School Safety Specialist is to ensure a safe and peaceful learning environment in all ECPS schools.


  • The secondary focus of the School Safety Specialist is to support the mission of the school district at large and is focused on the development of community building, student citizenship, student leadership and service learning.


  • In conjunction with the Building Principal, School Safety Manager and the School Safety Specialist works with parents, students, staff and communities’ groups to promote a culture of positive behavior.


  • Work involves a positive role model to youth and the community and it provides a liaison between students, parents, staff, administrators and the public at large.


  • Acts as a counselor for troubled youth, and as a teacher that acquaints and informs students of the danger of drugs, alcohol and destructive life decisions.


  • Supports the implementation of educational behavioral improvement programs as needed to nurture positive student social growth and a healthy self-respect for others and property in the schools.


  • Works with all relevant community agencies that offer programs to youths and their families, such as mental health clinics, drug treatment centers, etc., and may make referrals whenever appropriate.


  • Work involves assisting law enforcement wherever necessary in performing their duties.


  • Work includes preventive actions within the East Chicago Public School Corporation, providing a narrative to the Safety Manager as first responder, initial incident and follow-up investigation, and special assignments as needed.


  • Celebrates and embraces diversity in the community and successfully leverages these traits towards community building.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Selection shall include individuals who have demonstrated ability, interest, and skills necessary to work with youth, school staff, and the public. The following criteria should be considered when selected for the program.


SKILLS IN

  • Shall possess strong communication skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Creative problem solver
  • Using a computer and related software applications
  • Using modern office equipment


ABILITY TO

  • Conduct in-depth investigations in complex and sometimes volatile situations
  • Deal firmly and courteously with students, staff and the general public
  • Must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 0-3 years’ successful experience in local law enforcement or military experience

Sedentary Work: Sitting and/or driving for long periods of time, standing and/or walking for long periods of time, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, moving light furniture and/or equipment, walking several hours per day in hallways and outside. Must be able to work in heat and cold (outside seasonal temperatures).
