School Psychologist


General Definition of Work

Surry County Schools’ School Psychologists are integral members of data-driven MTSS teams,
participating regularly on problem-solving teams and providing both direct and indirect services
to students.


Education and Experience Qualifications

? Minimum sixth-year level degree (Master’s or higher) in School Psychology from an
approved training program and at least a one-year internship providing direct services for
K-12 students.
? Must hold or be eligible for a NC School Psychologist Professional Educator’s License
from NCDPI.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

? Knowledge of computers and various operating systems, word processing software,
spreadsheets, and databases.
? Knowledge of school procedures and proper methods for conducting educational
assessments for the purpose of disability identification.
? Knowledge of interventions and best practices in mental health.
? Knowledge of the MTSS process.
? Excellent oral and written communication skills.
? Ability to conduct professional development.
? Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment.
? Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with district staff.
? Ability to keep in confidence all personal or student records and information.


Essential Functions

? Engages in consultation, counseling, and crisis response.
? Assists with addressing students’ mental health needs.
? Holds conferences with parents.
? Conducts psychoeducational evaluations when student disabilities are suspected.
? Offers various trainings to staff.
? Participates on multi-disciplinary district-level teams.
? Attends weekly Behavior Support Team meetings.
? Works with teachers, school staff, and families as part of a collaborative team within the
school setting.

? Engages in regular professional development aimed at boosting skills and continuing
progress toward establishing a comprehensive service delivery model based on the
NASP Practice Model.
? Utilizes skills that respect issues of cultural and ethnic diversity and equity for every
student and family.
? Maintains accurate case records and documentation.
? Performs other duties as deemed appropriate and assigned.
