GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under minimal supervision, provides routine and complex respiratory therapy treatment to patients and performs a variety of routine pulmonary function tests according to established procedures in order to provide data used in diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease/ailments. In doing so, interprets physicians' order, obtains pertinent patient information, arranges and sets up necessary supplies and equipment, and monitors equipment regularly for proper functioning and records data obtained during therapy in patient charts. Assists in monitoring department procedures, recommends enhancements, and assists in developing procedures as requested.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except those that begin with the word "May.")

1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. This includes knowledge of the physical and psychological needs of patients served and the ability to respond appropriately to those needs.

  • Performs a variety of routine and complex diagnostic testing according to established procedures in order to provide data used in diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease/ailments, and to assess patient risk during surgery.
  • Observes patients during testing and notifies physician and/or other appropriate personnel of patient distress.
  • Calculates test results utilizing such factors as patients' age, weight, height, sex and so forth using established formulae; posts results in patients' charts and routes results to physicians.
  • Inspects pulmonary functioning testing equipment regularly, following prescribed quality control procedures, to ensure proper operation and integrity of test results. Makes minor adjustments to equipment and notifies supervisor of more extensive repair needs.
  • Provides routine and complex respiratory therapy services to patients including critical care areas. In doing so, interprets physicians' order to determine treatment requirements, obtains pertinent patient information including history of respiratory problems, current medication, patient pulse rate and the like. Reviews patients' charts to obtain other pertinent information.
  • Checks equipment for proper set-up, functioning and settings, and verifies physicians' orders before initiating procedures and treatments.
  • Monitors patients on continuous ventilation including maintenance of airway patency, suctioning and the like ensuring ventilators are delivering proper volume of air per breath at proper oxygen concentration and frequency. When indicated, weans patients from continuous ventilation according to established procedures.

3. Makes regular rounds of assigned patients to ensure physicians' orders are being followed, equipment is in good working condition and properly regulated, patients are comfortable and so forth. Records and charts all pertinent information.

4. Documents treatment activities and test results in patient records including treatment and medication administered, power source, heart and respiratory rate, and patient condition.

5. Assists in monitoring department procedures, recommends enhancements, and assists in developing procedures as requested.

6. Prepares related department duties such as preparing charge slips, ordering routine supplies, responding to codes and traumas, and so forth.

7. Maintains knowledge of current trends and techniques in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like.

8. Performs arterial blood gas puncture and analysis. Reports critical values to physician or designee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Required Education, Skills and/or Experience:
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited Respiratory Therapy program, as determined by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)
  • Required License and/or Certification:
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or proof of registry eligible status
  • State of Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner licensure within six months of employment
  • Current CPR certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Preferred License and/or Certification:
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within 24 months of employment
