About the Job

The Resident Assistant works to support the nursing staff and residents by assisting with meal service, clean up, laundry delivery, and providing recreation to the residents. All resident assistant tasks are performed in accordance with current standards, guidelines and regulations and in a safe and efficient manner. (see DHS “Noncertified Individuals in Delivery of Non-Hands-On Services, P-01559 (08/2016)).
Resident Rooms

• Make unoccupied beds
• Perform non-direct care task
• Pass clean linens
• Stock supplies to resident rooms
• Assist with washing and putting away resident laundry
• Assist in straightening rooms, bedside stand, ensures clothing is properly stored in a dresser or on hangers in the armoire
• Pass water to residents capable of having water at bedside

Dining Areas

• Set tables prior to meals
• Set up trays for independent residents
• Set up residents: place clothing protectors, napkins
• Pass towelettes for resident hand washing
• Serve food items to tables or CNA staff
• Pick up trays and food items from dining room
• Provide general clean-up of spills during mealtime
• Fill water pitchers

Activity Areas

• Assemble activity equipment
• Assist with activity setup and take down
• Assist activity staff with activity, but not cares
• Turn TV and Radios to preferred resident programs
• Clean and straighten areas before and after activity
• Assist residents in accomplishing an activity
• Write cards or letters with residents
• Read to residents
• continually seeks opportunities to support the social needs of the residents

Transporter

• May transport residents. However, may not transfer the resident from bed to wheelchair or wheelchair to bed

Common Areas

• Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents to the charge nurse
• Practices careful, efficient and non-wasteful use of supplies and linens
• Answer phones
• Greet and direct visitors
• Maintain all areas in a neat manner
• Visit with residents
• Treats residents, families, coworkers with respect and dignity, follows the STAR standards
• Uses good communication skills in resident care; ensures confidentiality
• Verbalizes understanding of the Abuse Prevention Policy and Procedure, including assurance of residents immediate safety and necessity of immediate reporting
• Verbalizes understanding of the procedure for reporting resident complaints
• Attends in-service education programs as assigned
• Adheres to policies and procedures of the facility
• Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

– Basic computer knowledge
– Work is performed largely in a pleasant long-term care environment with minimal chance for personal injury
– The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
– Able to work independently
