Research Technician II - Torbett Lab - Viral Genomics Research

Will support ongoing studies related to HIV host-pathogen interactions from the lens of Viral Genomics. Candidate will be involved in work leveraging cutting-edge long-read RNA sequencing approaches developed in the lab (MrHAMER, CASPR) to understand host and viral transcriptional dynamics. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and be motivated to learn and understand aspects of genomics and assay/method development from both a 'wet lab' and bioinformatics perspective.

Under direct supervision of a Senior Staff Scientist, applicant will be trained in the preparation of sequencing libraries for long-read sequencing of host and viral transcripts (from tissue culture and clinical samples), and in performing bioinformatics work analyze results using CLI-based bioinformatics tools. After training, candidate is expected to carry-out these protocols to completion and in a timely manner to support ongoing collaborations.

The group works as a highly dynamic and interactive team and is part of the Center for Immunity and Immunotherapies (CIIT) of Seattle Children's Research Institute (SCRI). Our work is funded by both the NIAID (PI: Torbett) and the Washington Research Foundation (PI: Gallardo). You will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing collaborations with B-HIVE Center Investigators throughout the US, as well as with collaborators in Fred Hutch and UW.

General Responsibilities

1- Be motivated to learn new techniques related to Viral Genomics

2- Be precise and consistent in performance of wet lab and bioinformatics work

3- Keep careful records of work performed

4- Follow established protocols and complete work in a timely manner

5- Assist Investigators in Data Analysis

6- Prepare reports of work performed

7- May be asked to present in scientific conferences

8- Based on interest and ability, may be responsible development and execution for small-scale research project which may lead to authorship in scientific publications

9- Participate in lab meetings and present their own data when appropriate

Requirements

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field
  • At least one year of previous laboratory experience performing Molecular Biology work using tissue culture of other in vitro samples

Preferred:

  • Aseptic Technique
  • Nucleic Acid Isolation/Extraction
  • Reverse Transcription and PCR
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Familiarity with Command Line Interfaces (CLI), such as Bash
  • Able to precisely and consistently process samples with meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills: record keeping, planning and execution of experiments, time management (multi-tasking and prioritization)
  • RNA virus experience
  • Experience with BSL2+ and BSL3 protocols
  • Familiarity with CLI-based bioinformatics tools for sequence analysis
  • Experience writing Bash scripts or using workflow management systems (Snakemake, Nextflow)
  • Familiarity with Next-Generation (Illumina), or Long-read sequencing (Nanopore, PacBio) technologies

$21.30 - $31.94 /hr

Min to Max Annual Salary

$44,304.00 - $66,435.20 /yr

Salary Information

This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year). Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided.

Seattle Children's offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
