Job description
Primary Work Address: 1550 4th Street, Suite 190, San Francisco, CA, 94158-0724

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Research Technician II to join the research team in the Cyster Lab at The University of California, San Francisco. The Cyster lab wants to understand how cell migration during immune responses is guided and controlled to support antigen encounter and cell-cell interaction events needed for immunity to pathogens and tumors. This includes efforts to understand how germinal centers function to support the generation of high affinity, long-lived antibody responses in health and disease. Cyster and his team also study immune recognition at mucosal surfaces, and neuro-immune communications. For more information about the Cyster lab, please visit

About the role:
In this role, you will join a team of scientists studying immune system dynamics during innate and adaptive immune responses. This research will focus on advanced imaging studies of mouse tissues and intravital imaging in mice. The position involves helping with project(s) being led by postdoctoral fellow(s) or graduate student(s) and the possibility for independent projects. We believe this opportunity will be perfect for someone who has experience in imaging and in microdissection, and someone who enjoys working with others. There will also be opportunities to contribute to additional projects and to help with lab management tasks. You will be a valued member of the lab and actively participate in weekly lab meetings, group meetings, assist with equipment maintenance and may order supplies. You will contribute to research results on an ongoing basis and mange routine aspects of research projects. Additionally, you will contribute information and opinions to formal and informal problem-solving process.
What we provide:
  • A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
  • An advanced multi-photon and confocal microscope and associated equipment and reagents.
  • Interaction with a team of graduate students and postdocs with experience using imaging to study the immune system.
  • Being part of research projects and having your name on research papers.
  • An outstanding institutional environment to learn advanced imaging and cutting-edge immunology.
  • Attending scientific conferences.
  • Weekly meetings with Dr. Cyster in a collaborative and highly team-oriented setting.
What you’ll do:
  • Perform skilled microscopy, mouse surgery and other technical procedures.
  • Use a Leica Stellaris Dive multi-photon and confocal microscope to perform deep tissue real-time imaging of fluorescently labeled cells and structures within mouse tissues.
  • Prepare mice for intravital imaging and isolate and prepare mouse tissues for explant imaging or for sectioning and staining.
  • Perform computational analysis of imaging data such as tracking cell migration dynamics.
  • Assist and train lab members with imaging experiments and use of the microscope.
  • Configure and operate additional laboratory scientific instrumentation, read and record instrument data, keep laboratory records, and prepare written summaries of experiments with results.
  • Perform cell culture and high-dimensional flow cytometry on cells from mouse or human tissues.
  • Help with maintenance of mouse colony, optimization of protocols, and documentation of compliance.
  • Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining the most suitable methods to be used in the research. Collaborate with other lab members on experimental design, protocols and developing new laboratory techniques.
What you bring:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate field of science or technology and two years of related laboratory research.
  • At least 12 months experience with using fluorescence, confocal and/or multi-photon microscope(s).
  • Experience working with mice in a laboratory setting.
  • Able to learn complex tasks with general instructions and then perform them independently.
  • The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, ambitious individual with strong organizational skills and willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Experience with sterile technique and cell culture.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
