Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is dedicated to providing an environment that fosters a multidisciplinary approach to questions in basic marine research. The mission of the center is to promote basic and applied research in the fields of oceanography, coastal and wetland studies, marine biomedical and environmental physiology, and marine biotechnology and aquaculture.
The UNCW’s Algal Resources Collection (UNCW-ARC) specializes in the maintenance and large-scale cultivation of harmful algal species and microalgae of biotechnological interest. The UNCW-ARC currently hosts 525 strains, distributed across eight algal taxonomic groups, available to the research community ( www.algalresourcescollection.com). Thanks to its infrastructure and expertise in managing challenging-to-grow microalgae, the ARC occupies an impactful niche primarily related to customized, large-scale microalgal cultivation.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Algal Resources Collection (UNCW-ARC) hosted at the Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is seeking a highly motivated research technician to work in the cryopreservation of microalgal cultures.
Primary duties include:
  • Preparation and sterilization of materials and culture media.
  • Periodic transfers of microalgal cultures.
  • Conduct experiments aiming at the optimization of protocol for microalgae cryopreservation.
  • Apply the developed protocol to all microalgae strains hosted at the UNCW-ARC.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports and manuscripts.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning (University or College) plus at least one year of technical training in microalgal culturing or microbiological technique

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
Training in cryopreservation.

Required Certifications or licensure
A valid driver’s license valid for the State of North Carolina is required.
