Job description

The Foundation

We are the largest nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. Founded on a simple premise: people everywhere, regardless of identity or circumstances, should have the chance to live healthy, productive lives. We believe our employees should reflect the rich diversity of the global populations we aim to serve. We provide an exceptional benefits package to employees and their families which include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with no premiums, generous paid time off, paid family leave, foundation-paid retirement contribution, regional holidays, and opportunities to engage in several employee communities. As a workplace, we’re committed to creating an environment for you to thrive both personally and professionally.

The Team

The Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM) is an embedded research institute within the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Health Division that uses computational modeling and data analysis to support policymakers in global health. Staff at IDM work with a wide ecosystem of partners including universities, NGOs, government ministries, other research organizations, and public health institutions. Through our research, IDM shapes global efforts to eradicate infectious disease and to achieve permanent improvements in the health of those most in need. The goal of IDM's Epidemiology Team is to utilize diverse quantitative approaches to conduct cross-cutting epidemiological research across a range of pathogens or systems.

  • This role is a limited-term position for 12 months. Relocation will not be provided.

Your Role

We are seeking a one-year limited-term Research Scientist to join IDM’s Epidemiology team in Seattle, WA. The scientist will join an ongoing research study that explores the utility of genomic data to inform epidemiology. Specifically, the research is focused on the relationships between pathogen phylogenies and epidemiological patterns such as incidence, importations, and sampling, and the information value of phylogenetic summary statistics (“tree statistics”). The work uses a combination of genomic epidemiology, dynamic modeling, bioinformatics, and statistics. The scientist will work with an experienced analysis team and will learn, apply, and improve tools and workflows for data analysis, model calibration, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, and more. There will be opportunities to influence the direction or focus of the research, including the application to specific pathogen systems, based on the scientist’s experience and interests, or the potential for public health value. The ideal candidate will be a creative, thoughtful, and curious scientist that identifies as a problem solver and subject matter expert. Publications will be encouraged and resulting tools and models will be shared broadly as open-source software.

Joining our group provides opportunities to interact with global-health policymakers, to collaborate with world-class researchers and non-profit organizations, and to contribute to more effective burden reduction and disease eradication strategies.

What You’ll Do

  • Apply existing, and develop new, computational tools to extract “tree statistics” from pathogen phylogenies

  • Design and execute hypothesis-driven molecular epidemiological analyses with input from teammates and collaborators

  • Survey scientific literature and remain current on relevant research topics

  • Support the timely and effective communication of research results through presentations, publications, and release of reproducible analysis code

Your Experience

  • PhD in subjects related to phylogenetics, genomic epidemiology, and bioinformatics, or equivalent experience

  • Computational experience in epidemiology or mathematical modeling

  • Proficiency in at least one data-analysis or scripting language (Python preferred)

  • Published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals

  • Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.

**The typical salary range for this role is $107,257 to $199,192 USD. The exact offer will be determined by a variety of factors such as the candidate’s individual skills, qualifications, and experience relative to the requirements of the role.

Hiring Requirements

As part of our standard hiring process for new employees, employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

Depending upon your work location, we may require proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 and any recommended booster doses. All employees based in the United States are to provide proof of full vaccination upon hire and any recommended boosters, subject to applicable laws.
