JOB SUMMARY

The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) is seeking applications for a Research Program Manager. The CTSRC is part of the Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) which is comprised of three research centers, the Technical Assistance and Training Center, The Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory, and CTSRC. The Connecticut Transportation Institute (CTI) was established at the University of Connecticut in 1974 and operates within the School of Engineering. CTI’s mission is to conduct integrated multidisciplinary research, education, and related services that promote safety and efficiency in multi-modal passenger and freight transportation systems and, in turn, enhance livable communities, sustainable economies, and the environment. CTI brings together a critical mass of transportation faculty and research talent at the University of Connecticut, the top public research institution in New England.

This position will assist the Director of the CTSRC in the day-to-day operations of the Center and research project and staff oversight. The successful candidate will provide leadership over major research efforts and administrative functions at CTSRC, including financial management, planning and implementing department programs and goals, and serve as the primary advisor for policies, planning, and Center initiatives. This position will be a champion for CTSRC and work to promote the research and work being conducted as well as a liaison between the Center and our sponsors. The successful candidate will need to be able to analyze available information, draw conclusions from scientific/engineering studies, and present research and conclusions effectively to senior management and project sponsors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with the Center Director to plan and evaluate policies and procedures with respect to staff and productivity.
  • Manages and schedules the weekly work tasks assigned to personnel, including reviewing research progress, and providing guidance.
  • Prepares monthly reports for research projects and annual or other periodic reports to project sponsors.
  • Supervises the day-to-day delivery of a wide variety of research activities.
  • Engages in promotional activities for the Center and works closely with the Connecticut Department of Transportation CTDOT to ensure project success.
  • Ability to serve as an editor or generator of outward-facing documents, webpage, or promotional content.
  • Actively seeks opportunities that are relevant to promote and enhance the research efforts and expand the focus areas of the center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • The position requires a Ph.D. or, an M.A. or M.S. with eight to ten years of post-degree experience.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective and clear written and verbal communication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a research-related field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities with particular emphasis on the ability to understand, interpret, and summarize scientific research initiatives across a variety of subject domains for presentation to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing complex solicitations and translating technical concepts into a fundable proposal.
  • Proven experience in business development, strategic planning, project management, and technical writing.
  • Ability to assume a lead role in project and program management and demonstrated expertise in managing the development of complex documents, together with faculty colleagues.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple complex programs and activities in a timely manner with a high degree of quality, while remaining responsive to varying deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to build consensus and lead teams to achieve desired outcomes.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment. The position may be annually renewable based on performance, budget, and needs of the Department and College. The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. The hiring range for this position is $75,000- $90,000. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's background and experience.
