Position Summary Information
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s in the biological sciences or relate degree.
- Teaching experience.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Creative problem-solving abilities.
- Management experience.
- Ability to work independently or as a collaborative team member, as deemed appropriate.
- Experience with small equipment repair and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with operation and maintenance of advanced research instrumentation used in biological research (e.g. flow cytometer, sequencer, thermocycler, etc).
- A driver’s license and clean driving record is required for assisting in departmental motor pool operations.
License/Certification Required
- First aid/CPR/AED or willingness to obtain certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- The successful candidate should enjoy working in a large department with diverse interdisciplinary interests that span the breadth of biology. They will also have strong skills in communication, organization, creative problem-solving, management, and interpersonal skills. The candidate will use these skills to facilitate teaching and research operations in a dynamically changing work environment.
- Experience with advanced research instrumentation (flow cytometer, sequencer, thermocycler, DDPCR, etc) used in biological research is important, as is teaching experience.
Experience with small equipment repair and troubleshooting is also helpful.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Biology seeks a
Research Operations Manager with a Masters in Biology or related degree.
The Research Operations Manager will create a more productive department by overseeing building operations including, but not limited to maintenance, servicing, repair, scheduling, and training of students, faculty, and staff on departmental instrumentation used in teaching and research; responding to emergencies; serving as departmental point person for facilities, IT, environmental health safety, and accessibility offices; and coordinating annual inspections and certifications related to instrumentation, health, and safety.
The candidate will also offer a course each semester in Advanced Research Instrumentation for our undergraduate and Master’s level research students that will provide these student’s valuable training on cutting-edge instrumentation used in industry and basic research.

Specific duties would include but are not limited to:
- Teaching a course in Advanced Research Instrumentation,
- Servicing, maintenance, and calibration of major research instrumentation,
- Managing upkeep, training, and scheduling of shared instrumentation (e.g., flow cytometer, qPCR machine, etc.),
- Communicating building infrastructure maintenance needs and issues to facilities operations.
- Serve as a liaison with University offices on health, environmental, biological, and chemical safety.
