The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting for a part time 75% FTE Research Coordinator.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBSCI) within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 300 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $35 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. The Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute (ADAI) was established by the University of Washington in 1973 and exists to advance research, policy, and practice in order to improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by alcohol and drug use and addictions.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Research Coordinator assists in the conduct of NIAAA-funded research investigating the long-term effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in adults. The primary purpose of the position is to collaborate with project investigators and staff to operationalize study protocols and carry out the day-to-day activities of the research, following procedures approved by the University of Washington (UW) Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Position Complexities:
Works independently under the project PI to facilitate a positive experience for research participants living with neurocognitive disabilities and experiencing various levels of socio-economic and health related vulnerabilities; provides compassionate, clear, and respectful engagement with participants, guardians, and caretakers as they move through the informed consent process and research measures, answering questions as needed and providing IRB approved resource lists as needed; participates in continued communication and coordination with research partners at other universities. This position also manages the ongoing digitization of archival data for the Streissguth Research Repository.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:
Plays a key role in carrying forward the research legacy of Dr. Anne Streissguth, founder of the Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit (FADU) and supporting ground-breaking scientific inquiry into an under-researched area of health impacts on adults with prenatal alcohol exposure. Supports the overall stewardship of the Streissguth Research Repository, a unique and valuable registry of and repository of data from consenting individuals diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) who were involved in research projects at FADU over the years. Supports the educational, research and service mission, vision, and values of the UW by maintaining protocol compliance with the IRB.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Position Responsibilities: Research Study Planning and Operations

Research Recruitment, Implementation, and Enrollment 35%
Searches for and locates study participants using contact notes from prior studies and a commercial locator database (N=120 participants over four year period including N=60 participants with PAE involved in prior study, N=30 control participants who participated in the prior study and N=30 new control participants over the age of 65); recruits and consents study participants including answering participants’ and guardians’ questions regarding study protocol; reviews and explains consent forms to engage participants in informed consent process; reviews and explains study questionnaires; maintains confidentiality of participant records; schedules participants’ appointments at UW locations, including the Addictions Drug & Alcohol Institute, UW Medicine Roosevelt Clinic, and UW Medical Center Montlake; coordinates travel arrangements best suited to the participants’ needs including Uber, public transportation, participants’ personal vehicles, air travel, and overnight lodging as needed; accompanies participants through the day of testing, facilitating a positive experience by offering clear communication and providing snacks and breaks as needed; administers data collection protocols including physical examination (height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse), 3D facial photographs, and surveys and tests related to problem solving skills, memory, life stressors, drug and alcohol use, demographics and mental and physical health.

Administration and Communications Liaison 20%
Coordinates study details and planning amongst researchers partners at EU and UBC as well as internal UW partners including RTS, blood draw lab mangers, and the finance department; completes participant remuneration and travel reimbursement payments; tracks study expenses and provides updated participant flow forecasts as needed to inform spending projections by the project fiscal specialist; facilitates and organizes the agenda for monthly team meeting; attends multi-site meetings with research partners at EU and UBC and other external partners as needed.

Research Study Planning and Operations 20%
Co-creates Seattle site protocol and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Effects of PAE in Adulthood study in collaboration with researchers at UW, Emory University (EU), and University of British Columbia (UBC); works with UW Research Testing Services (RTS) to develop specimen collection requisition protocol including storage and shipment of blood samples to research partners at UBC; develops testing day itinerary and protocol checklist including participant travel, instructions for fasting blood draw, food, and all other testing measures; provides training and planning necessary for psychological and health questionnaires; purchases and organizes all materials necessary for implementation of study protocol including blood collection tubes and other medical and technical equipment; assists PI in IRB application and modifications.

Data Management and Reporting 15%
Enters participant data into REDCap and provides fidelity review of data entered by hourly and student staff; provides monthly enrollment and demographic reports to lead researchers at EU and generates REDCap data reports for partner researchers when requested; oversees and enters participant contact information and progress tracking into the access database; manages the Streissguth Research Repository digital archive.

Training 10%
Trains and provides guidance to hourly and student research staff on IRB approved recruitment procedures and research testing protocols..

Lead Responsibilities:
Assists PI in supervising hourly and student research staff by assigning tasks, overseeing time/labor workflow efficiency and monitoring work completed; oversees planning and personnel staffing to complete the Streissguth Research Repository digitization project.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Research or Education fields

One year work related experience

Engagement with vulnerable populations specifically those with neurocognitive disabilities and socio-economic and health related vulnerabilities, research coordination and administrative support, advanced computer and data skills, working independently with minimal supervision as well as working with part of team

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders
